In the magic and stage mentalism worlds, this one is a bit of a classic: Trance-Formations: Neuro-Linguistic Programming and the Structure of Hypnosis - 1981. When I was doing magic, I found quite a bit of it to be useful in helping structure routines, patter, or improve non-mentalist effects.…

In re: effective therapy I can recommend what's called Neurolinguistic Programming. It's pretty much an OS for the mind. Specifically, I can recommend two books on hypnosis: "TRANCE-Formations" by Bandler and Grinder, and "Monsters and Magical Sticks" by Steven Heller. For "higher" states of consciousness there is actually a simple and effective algorithm called "Core Transformation Process"…

In re: hypnosis in general the books I recommend are: "TRANCE-formations" by Bandler and Grinder, and "Monsters and Magical Sticks: There's No Such Thing as Hypnosis?" by Heller. For specifically improving "cognitive enhancement" the easiest, safest, and most far-reaching…

…guy I heard about", it was me. I lived the anecdote.) FWIW, some books. "Structure of Magic" I & II are the first two books and are a good place to start from to see the origins of the latter work. TRANCE-Formations is a rich text on theraputic hypnosis. And then there's the Core Transformation Process, an algorithm for profound spiritual growth. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/964154.The_Structure_of_... https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/821993.The_Structure_of_...…

…is a set of questions designed to elicit elided information in a therapeutic setting. Beyond that I don't really have any recommendations. It really depends on what you want to do. You might enjoy "Trance-FORMATIONS" which is IMO one of the best books on hypnosis ever written, it's all about how language affects and guides the mind. I suppose you could also go take a class or course?

…sounds weird to me, because my experience has been that theory is treated as no more than a prop to support hypnosis. The emphasis is always on the pragmatic and empirical. If you go read the books like "TRANCE-Formations" they are really upfront that they have no idea why this stuff works. Whatever NLP is, they collected "a bunch of things that do work" many of which no one ever noticed and wrote down before, eh?
