on “Ask HN: Which books have you re-read the most?” ↗On a side note, have you checked out this new translation of The Odyssey? https://www.amazon.com/Odyssey-Homer/dp/0393089053/ I haven't read all of it yet but I read a good chunk and it's pretty excellent.
on “The unnecessary demise of Barnes and Noble” ↗Ten Little Indians by Agatha Christie The Odyssey by Homer
on “Ask HN: What is your favorite fiction book?” ↗There's a recent (2017) English translation of the Odyssey by Emily Wilson. It's absolutely electric! Robert Fagles is one of the most famous English translators of the Odyssey, but I find Wilson's to be more fun to read. I think one reason why I enjoy Wilson's…
on “The Odyssey – Alexander Pope translation (1725)” ↗I'll give a caveat - many of the classics suffered by being translated. They're translated in a Victorian or pseudo-Victorian style that takes all the pizzazz out of them. For instance, the Odyssey never gripped me until Emily Wilson's translation. Beautifully lucid, so clear my eight-year-old niece easily followed it, the story pops again. By this measure, book quality and release date may have…
on “Why Read Classic Books?” ↗Emily Wilson, whose 2017 English translation of the Odyssey is extremely readable, is now working on translating the Iliad. https://www.capstan.be/british-scholar-emily-wilsons-fresh-a...
on “Ask HN: What Lived Up to the Hype?” ↗Very much looking forward to Emily Wilson's forthcoming translation. She translated the Odyssey a few years ago, still in verse but with less stilted language, definitely makes it more accessible. Looking forward to reading it to my children when they're just a couple years older.
on “Ask HN: What Lived Up to the Hype?” ↗I can warmly recommend the new Iliad translation by Caroline Alexander as audiobook. Suberb! I understand the new translation by Emily Wilson (whose Odyssey was excellent) should be good as well. The new translations really bring these old poems to life, and listening to them is at least for me the best way to consume them.
on “War Music: Homer and His Iliad” ↗The Odyssey translated by Emily Wilson especially if you've already read it, this translation is fantastic.
on “Ask HN: 2018 Summer Reading List?” ↗Check out Emily Wilson's recent translation of The Odyssey for a great read in contemporary English. https://www.emilyrcwilson.com/the-odyssey
on “The Odyssey by Homer, Translated by Samuel Butler” ↗I quite like Emily Wilson's recent translation of the Odyssey. I just wish she had kept "winged words" in, but that's a very minor thing. For the Iliad, I have a preference for Richmond Lattimore. His is fairly true to the original and so it feels like an old story…
on “The Odyssey by Homer, Translated by Samuel Butler” ↗Her Translator’s Notes at the preface of her translation of the Odyssey are fascinating to read (as was her translation). https://dornsife.usc.edu/assets/sites/903/docs/wilson_emily_...
on “The Odyssey by Homer, Translated by Samuel Butler” ↗Wait for Emily Wilson (due at the end of September). Her Odyssey is easily among the great classical translations.
on “War Music: Homer and His Iliad” ↗…and how president JFK took steps to bring the economy back. 2) Digital Minimalism - This is one book I would like to revisit every two years. About digital distractions and how to minimize it. 3) The Odyssey By Emily Wilson- This was a surprising easy read with author's notes on the backdrop. Helps you understand Greek mythology and some unraveling of human emotions. Pretty deep. Highly recommend. 4) Long…
on “Ask HN: Books you read in 2023 and recommend for 2024” ↗Just finished re-reading Emily Wilson's translation of the Odyssey a few weeks ago. If you haven't read the Odyssey before, I think her translation is accessible enough to just jump right in. My favorite part of the story is how central luck is to everything. The…
