…http://www.kohala.com/start/tcpipiv1.html If you find time, you should read the second volume as well: http://www.kohala.com/start/tcpipiv2.html For databases, I read this book: http://www.amazon.ca/Database-System-Concepts-Abraham-Silber... This is not a very interesting book, but it does cover the fundamentals very well. You will need a bit of will power to read it.
on “The software development final exam: Algorithms and Data Structures” ↗Database System Concepts by Silberschatz, Korth and Sudarshan is great. I used the 5th edition, but have heard the 6th edition apparently regressed. There's now apparently a 7th edition that I can't comment on.
on “Make Your Database Tables Smaller” ↗…"Readings in Database Systems" is your cup of tea you should probably consider * Database Internals (https://www.oreilly.com/library/view/database-internals/9781...) - very recent and of manageable size * Database System Concepts (https://www.amazon.com/Database-Concepts-Abraham-Silberschat...) - specifically, the chapters on storage and query processing, it's a huge volume otherwise. Also, "Database Systems: The Complete Book"…
on “Books for Software Engineers in 2023” ↗…of Computer Programming by Donald Knuth is a reference you can return to time and again for the rest of your career. 5) Enough database theory and SQL to feel comfortable writing basic queries. Maybe Database System Concepts by Silberschatz, et al for the theory and one of the "SQL cookbook" texts for practical applications. Make sure that whatever cookbook you use covers things like SQL injection and that you fully understand…
on “Ask HN: How would you relearn programming?” ↗…just DFS into certain topics from there - compared to the approach I've been taking with deep diving into OS and database theory which is just to go through text books like Operating System Concepts and Database System Concepts while applying the theory in side projects.
on “MongoDB 3.4.0-rc3” ↗…manual. But it's not awfully practical if you have no particular interest in DB technology. And both are pretty dense. * https://www.amazon.com/Database-Systems-Complete-Book-2nd/dp * https://www.amazon.com/Database-System-Concepts-Abraham-Silb... There's a very cool not-quite-alternativE: https://leanpub.com/how-query-engines-work. It covers a fair chunk of DB technology but not storage. Definitely check out their repository at…
on “Databases, Types, and the Relational Model: The Third Manifesto [pdf]” ↗Thank you for posting this. I have the book Database System Concepts a d I am yet to get to the point to relational algebra optimisation. My SQL implementation I planned to do a hash join with the smaller table. It was very rudimentary. I don't have indexes though.
on “How cost-based SQL query optimizers work (1979) [pdf]” ↗…Christopher Alexander but not "A Pattern Language" I actually owned that book "Notes on the Synthesis of Form" but I never read it, I gave all my books away. Maybe I'll have to get it after I finish reading "Database System Concepts" which I am slow to read. I would like to hear YOUR ideas too! Send me an email, I hope you shall tell me your ideas and thoughts and we can bounce off eachother. Please (and anybody else reading) do…
