I wholeheartedly disagree with the recommendation of "Artificial Intelligence, by Elaine Rich". The book was unreadable in a way that made me want to detest the subject. I found the Patrick Winston text a lot nicer.
on “Books that will Substitute for a Computer Science Degree” ↗…recognition algorithm? More of a logic focus? If you just want Deep Learning and statistical methods, then Bishop's Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning is a good start. Otherwise, Russel and Norvig's Artificial Intelligence or Patrick Winston's similarly titled book are great starting points. For more big-picture stuff, Marvin Minsky's Society of Mind is great, and Hofstader's Gödel, Escher, Bach is a classic too. Both…
on “Ask HN: Best books on AI?” ↗The classic 6.034 of [Classic] Artificial Intelligence from the late Prof. Patrick Winston is "mandatory".
on “MIT Lectures: The Future of AI Is Self-Supervised Learning and Foundation Models” ↗I remember reading this book a long time ago and thought it had some pretty interesting concepts around agents: https://aima.cs.berkeley.edu/ this was another one: https://www.amazon.com/Artificial-Intelligence-3rd-Winston/d...
on “Scaffolded LLMs as natural language computers” ↗I'd gotten a copy of Patrick Henry Winston's "Artificial Intelligence" 2nd edition around 1990. The subject matter was fascinating to me but too far over my head for me to do anything practical. I picked it up a few years later and noodled around w/ neural networks a little…

But he saw Patrick Winston's Artificial Intelligence that had been just published (I think he got an early proof copy to review or something), and he realized for the first time that digital typesetting was an option (apparently Winston's book was printed…
