What Hacker News says

…highly recommend CSS Mastery by Andy Budd. It actually has a great introductory section in there, and no one puts into plain English better the reasons why certain hacks are used in certain browsers. Web Standards Solutions by Dan Cederholm is a solid intermediate level book and if you want a good one on usability, I think Jakob Nielsen's Prioritizing Web Usability is a solid, well-researched read. Anyone remembers Dan Cederholm (http://www.simplebits.com/) and his excellent books "Web Standards Solutions" and "Bulletproof Web Design"? He even had a series of exercises like this on his blog. Oh, the gone days of the web which was a web and not some misfit wannabe app engine :(

I did like both books by Cederholm, so I also recommend Web Standards Solutions: The Markup and Style Handbook

http://htmldog.com/ wasn't bad as far as I remember. Be careful with the books, do not pick "old-style" one, which pays no attention to web standards and semantics. I'd recommend "Web Standards Solutions: The Markup and Style Handbook" by Dan Cederholm (http://astore.amazon.com/simplebits-20/detail/1590593812). Not exactly introductory, but worth reading.

Dan Cederholm is a high-quality designer with great jumpstart material. Namely, his books "Bulletproof Web Design" (http://www.simplebits.com/publications/bulletproof/), and "Web Standards Solutions" (http://www.simplebits.com/publications/solutions/). If you can afford the time and expense, a one-day Carson Workshop from a CSS master can help a lot. This one is already past, but for example: http://carsonworkshops.com/design-dev/clarke/14May2008.html…
