There was a book by Dave Shea and Molly Holzschlag called "The zen of CSS design" that explained some of the tricks of the most amazing themes. On my last cleaning I let go of a lot of now obsolete books but that book remains, it's so beautiful!

Great article, a nice trip down memory lane. I still have my copy of “The Zen of CSS Design: Visual Enlightenment for the Web” somewhere. I know Dave Shea wasn’t mentioned, but this book was my intro into design on the earlyish web.

…ironic to me that you would revert to using dead-tree media for instruction on how to style the cutting edge. If you simply need an introduction to css then w3schools can't be beat. Oh, and I also own zen of css design, which is pretty good if you must have a physical book.

Hello NH. I'm looking for Frontend / CSS / and-so-on books to master my outdated skills. For example, ages ago i'd suggest Zeldman books or 'The Zen of CSS Design' by Dave Shea, but it seems to me that A LOT changed for now on. Any great books to understand how to do perfect frontend today? Thanks.

Remember CSS Zen Garden (http://www.csszengarden.com/) and The Zen of CSS Design book? And Zeldman (http://www.zeldman.com/)? Way cool when cutting edge designers were figuring out what CSS 2.1 is capable of. But such low contrast! And lots of tan. Then the candy-colors-on-white "Web…

At my day job, I listened to the Boag World Podcast, which taught me about Zen of CSS Design, Don't Make me Think, Sitepoint, nettuts, etc. Started playing around and coding some rudimentry designs I made. College made me bitter after transferring to Chicago (whole other story), and realized…
