While this is an interesting book in its genre, I prefer to read actual MMIX code in The MMIX Supplement by Martin Ruckert[0]. The relation between the two books resembles that between, say, Manual of Surgery and Frankenstein, or Teach Yourself Romanian and Dracula. Instead of the ultimate edition of vols 1-3, so far we've got a "patch" by Martin Ruckert who coordinated the volunteers: https://www.amazon.com/MMIX-Supplement-Computer-Programming-...
on “MMIX 2009: A RISC computer for the third millennium (2011)” ↗…(https://retrocomputing.stackexchange.com/a/18176). The specific MIX language is no longer similar to present-day machines (self-modifying code is out of style, for instance), which is why he came up with "MMIX" and there's a book (“The MMIX supplement” by Martin Ruckert, but carefully proofread by Knuth) with the MMIX equivalents of all the MIX programs. But in any case the algorithms are taught in English not MIX; the MIX programs are only a very…
on “Ask HN: Is Knuth's TAOCP worth the time and effort? (2023)” ↗…but IIRC it'll be quite a while before they plan to rework Volumes 1-3 for MMIX (the new assembly language). Instead two smaller updates have been published, "TAOCP Volume 1, Fascicle 1: MMIX" and "The MMIX Supplement" by Martin Ruckert. Regarding if it's justified, you might want to look at Knuth's forword to The MMIX Supplement. In short, he says that it's important to have some understanding of all the layers in…
on “Current draft of The Art of Computer Programming pre-fascicle 6a [ps]” ↗All the volume 4A listings are in MMIX, and there's "The MMIX Supplement" by Martin Ruckert, redoing the first three volumes in MMIX, which I believe is regarded as the authoritative edition. As to the ultimate versions (or even finishing until volume 5): not to be morbid,…

on “Knuth's Art of Computer Programming, V 4B, has gone into print” ↗…during 1999–2011. The MMIX update to TAOCP started being put online in 1999 and was published in 2005 (Fascicle 1) and all the individual programs were finally put in book form by Martin Ruckert in 2015 (MMIX Supplement). The design of MMIX is close enough to (some/many) actual CPUs of the present/future — it's basically a RISC architecture like MIPS or RISC-V; in fact Knuth closely worked with Hennessy and Dick Sites…

The best way to enhance our level-jumping skills is to exercise them frequently." — Foreword to The MMIX Supplement, published 2015. • The second major criticism in the post is that the woven program (the readable output of the LP system: a typeset PDF file or book or whatever) is "dead". This is reasonable given…
