Things have never been easy for Oscar. A ghetto nerd living with his Dominican family in New Jersey, he's sweet but disastrously overweight. He dreams of becoming the next J. R. R. Tolkien and he keeps falling hopelessly in love. Poor Oscar may never get what he wants, thanks to the Fuku - the curse that has haunted his family for generations. With dazzling energy and insight Díaz immerses us in the tumultuous lives of Oscar, his runaway sister Lola, their beautiful mother Belicia, and in the family's uproarious journey from the Dominican Republic to the US and back. …in the Culture series, well-written but way way longer than it should be, which is annoying) John le Carre, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (re-read this spy classic, for Le Carre's style) Junot Diaz, The Brief Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao (peppered with nerdy references from the 80ies and 90ies, the style is annoying at first, but grows on you, and the novel only gets better. A great novel) I was where you are a few years ago: realized…

The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao Excellent storytelling, humour and slice of life human drama. It's just amazing how Junot Diaz tells of the tragedy of one family and the fukú curse that haunts them over generations. http://www.amazon.com/The-Brief-Wondrous-Life-Oscar/dp/15944...

I wonder how much of goth locations depend on mass transit options. We should put trackers on all of them, obviously, and do a controlled study. I just started reading "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao" by Junot Diaz, and it is about a kid who is into subcultures within a strong Dominican community inside a larger NYC community. Interesting parallels.
