The purpose of all architecture, writes Christopher Alexander, is to encourage and support life-giving activity, dreams, and playfulness. But in recent decades, while our buildings are technically better--more sturdy, more waterproof, more energy efficient-- they have also became progressively more sterile, rarely providing the kind of environment in which people are emotionally nourished, genuinely happy, and deeply contented. Using the example of his building of the Eishin Campus in Japan, Christopher Alexander and his collaborators reveal an ongoing dispute between two fundamentally differe

…whole effort. It is a deeply insightful book into the way humans relate to each other. I do second the recommendation to read the other works as well. If pairing one book with Pattern, I would choose The Battle for the Life and Beauty of the Earth because it most clearly portrays the process of taking Alexander’s thinking into the real world and overcoming its perverse incentives to impose ugliness and financial difficulty. I gave a talk for a…

I read Notes on the Synthesis of Form and I loved it. Then I read A Pattern Language... damn son. I recently bought The Battle for the Life and Beauty of the Earth. Within the first 2 pages I was already hooked. But in fairness, It's because I think we are two minds alike so I hardly disagree with him... which I think it's bad.

It sounds like you might want to read "Battle for the Life and Beauty of the Earth". If you want to go deep his magnus opus is "Nature of Order". It's transcendent.

…Phenomenon of Life is what you’re looking for. Going back in time, The Timeless Way of Building and A Pattern Language show the roots of The Nature of Order series. To look at a recent case study, The Battle for the Life and Beauty of the Earth. I also recommend looking at works by Salingaros and Mehaffy like Design for a Living Planet, Principles of Urban Structure, and Unified Architecture Theory.

This seems opposite to me. Most architecture is prescriptive and there is little tolerance for Alexander's circumstantial and use-based design. If the story he recounts in The Battle for the Life and Beauty of the Earth is true, his preference to use simple materials and let the budget constrain the design makes him an enemy of building firms which use standards to justify cost overruns. What did you think about that…

He also published The Battle for the Life and Beauty of the Earth after this page was made (apologies if I overlooked the reference.) It’s about a more successful project, a Japanese college campus. The difficulties he faced were very interesting, especially from bureaucratic…
