…because the books stand no chance in comparison with better GL books. Don't ask me for book recommendations, I don't really know. The only one I've heard good things about is the very latest edition of the OpenGL Superbible.
on “Learning Modern 3D Graphics Programming” ↗As a long time game programmer, I can tell you that the OpenGL Superbible is the only reference book anyone uses.
on “Learning Modern 3D Graphics Programming” ↗…enjoyed at a leisurely pace, but contains enough deep thinking type of material to motivate you. 5. A comprehensive reference book about a specific framework or concept (Game Engine Architecture and OpenGL SuperBible come to mind). 6. The Art of Computer Programming. I only consider the last 3 productivity material. The first 3 can be helpful in rare instances, but they're more akin to watching a 3blue1brown video…
on “Productivity porn” ↗Looks like a great first book on OpenGL, written in a tutorial style. One can read this book first and then approach more complex (complete) books like OpenGL SuperBible.
on “Learning Modern 3D Graphics Programming” ↗…books can be a hit or a miss, but Game Engine Architecture is an amazing overview of all the major systems in a game engine. You’d also be doing yourself a disservice if you didn’t read something like OpenGL Superbible (that book filled in so many gaps in my knowledge and made graphics development so much easier). As for the rest of your comment I absolutely agree. I wouldn’t discourage anybody from trying to write…
on “Game Development Post-Unity” ↗…[Update] Here are three good references that I extracted: http://nopper.tv/norbert/opengl.html http://www.amazon.com/Beginning-OpenGL-Programming-Second-Ed... -- Mixed reviews http://www.amazon.com/OpenGL-SuperBible-Comprehensive-Tutori...
on “Michael Abrash's Graphics Programming Black Book” ↗Link on Amazon shows there is newer edition OpenGL® SuperBible, Seventh Edition https://amazon.com/OpenGL-Superbible-Comprehensive-Tutorial-... ps: why website is unmaintained ?http://www.openglsuperbible.com/
on “OpenGL Superbible” ↗Anyone else have info. on this? I started by writing games and game engines as a teenager (now ~14 years ago), reading "Real-time Rendering" and the "OpenGL Superbible". I've done a lot more with computer graphics since, writing pixel shaders for fun, building a web-based domain specific CAD tool (for a client) etc. Also been doing some computational geometry stuff…
on “Computer Graphics from Scratch (2017)” ↗…Foundations of Game Engine Dev - Mathematics, by Lengyel (because when it comes to math, overkill is underrated) - CGPP (to get the basics down) ... not sure about the order for my other books, but then... - OpenGL SuperBible (second time around, sadly) - Real-Time Rendering - PBR For the math books, I was thinking to do the same thing as you: do the math by hand, and then translate them into tests.
on “Ray Tracing Essentials, Part 1: Basics of Ray Tracing” ↗> - OpenGL SuperBible (second time around, sadly) I tried using the SuperBible in order to learn OpenGL a few years back, but it always seems to be a bit too dense for my taste. Since OpenGL itself is an API specification…
on “Ray Tracing Essentials, Part 1: Basics of Ray Tracing” ↗…for a beginner, unless they are stubborn enough and diligent enough to persevere through all of it. I should have paid that $100 to use the Torque engine, instead of buying the OpenGL Reference Manual, OpenGL Superbible and the OpenGL Shading Manual. Lastly I fell into the trap of buying the books, but not working on games, aka "all the gear but no f*cking idea". My shelf is filled with highly regarded books that I…
on “Finding your home in game graphics programming” ↗The OpenGL Superbible is a nice read; but - as already noted - not really suitable as an introductory tutorial by itself. You should at least couple it with a basic knowledge of linear algebra. 'Back in uni' (I don't like…
on “Learning Modern 3D Graphics Programming” ↗I think any recent book on OpenGL worth its salt would cover shaders in detail. I've just picked up the OpenGL SuperBible (6th ed.) and it's got several hundred pages dedicated to shaders.
on “Why you should use OpenGL and not DirectX” ↗There are always (commercial) books like the "OpenGL 4.0 Shading Language Cookbook, the "OpenGL Programming Guide" or the "OpenGL SuperBible".
on “The Book of Shaders” ↗…programming. I went from having written two little things in VB to writing games and game engines, emulators, 3D model loaders etc. Whenever I was on a bus I was probably reading Real-time Rendering or the OpenGL Superbible. I had no social difficulties at that time. And soon after I quit programming because my wrist were bothering me, and I fairly easily made a new group of friends who I started hanging out with (non-nerdy…
