A coup in Cambodia. Guns to Guatemala. For the men and women of Shorn Associates, opportunity is calling. In the superheated global village of the near future, big money is made by finding the right little war and supporting one side against the other–in exchange for a share of the spoils. To succeed, Shorn uses a new kind of corporate gladiator: sharp-suited, hard-driving gunslingers who operate armored vehicles and follow a Samurai code. And Chris Faulkner is just the man for the job. He fought his way out of London’s zone of destitution. And his kills are making him famous. But unlike hi

Reminds me of "Market Forces". Good noir corporate fiction: http://www.amazon.com/Market-Forces-Richard-K-Morgan/dp/0345...

on “Ask HN: Interesting (Non software) books?” ↗…but I have a trail of Takeshi Kovacs characters in various mmos and games, and am in general a Richard K Morgan fan. I loved Altered Carbon series. His recent-er Thirteen was fun imaginative Mars stuff. Market Forces is old old old & has a lot of mediocre aspects, but I loved the Car Wars style setting & corporate mercenary treatment.
on “The $55M saga of the Netflix series nobody will never see” ↗Have you read "Market Forces" by Richard Morgan? Seems like you'd fit right in. Money, business, and taking care to skate just within the line of the law doesn't absolve you from being evil and effectively using your position to…
on “Who Are My Investors?” ↗…you don't take it as being serious in any way (other than in its satire of cyberpunk and its lambasting of a corporate-owned American future), I find it quite enjoyable. But it is a satire. I hope :) (Market Forces by Richard Morgan is another book I very much enjoyed, which is also very much this way)
on “The Influence of Neuromancer on Cyberpunk” ↗Is it more, or do these leaks paint StratFor as something along the lines of a "conflict investment firm" on the lines of Richard Morgan's Market Forces [1]? Jacket cover description excerpt: "A coup in Cambodia. Guns to Guatemala. For the men and women of Shorn Associates, opportunity is calling. In the superheated global village of the near future,…
on “Wikileaks publishes 500k new Stratfor emails” ↗I recently finished "Market Forces" by Richard Morgan, he's most famous for his SF works, but this one is a near-future thriller where capitalism has gone slightly too far, the roads are mostly abandoned since most people cannot afford…
on “2040: Diary of an interesting year” ↗Sounds like something out of Richard K Morgan's "Market Forces" actually. But that's assuming life imitates art. Clearly it's the opposite - as books like John Perkins' "Confessions of an Economic Hitman" seem to indicate.
on “The Hedge Fund and the Despot” ↗…birds get all the spaces with powerplugs, monitors, network etc. The rest must fight it out on bench seats with no power etc. They had a weird back-story vignette told by a character in a novel called "Market Forces" by Richard Morgan like this. There was an economic downturn, and the bosses decided that instead of picking who got fired, to just reduce the number of desks from 10 to 8 and let the workers race into…
