on “Ask HN: What recreational books related to programming can you recommend?” ↗William Gibson would be proud. (Before anybody takes any offence on this, I really hope y'all read Johnny Mnemonic).
on “Ask HN: What did you make during lockdown?” ↗It's a reference to the story that inspired the movie. > The prototype of our character is the cyborg dolphin Jones from the story "Johnny Mnemonic" by William Gibson.
on “Flipper Zero – Portable Multi-Tool Device for Geeks” ↗…underground using free software, private but linked ad-hoc networks, etc. The victories of the super rich over the rest of us in the last decade actually have me looking at fiction like the world in Gibson's 'Johnny Mnemonic' as a real possibility for the future.
on “Dear Dr. Stallman: An Open Letter” ↗I think the ideas of the people who are talking about cellphones and tumors can be traced back to Johnny Mnemonic, where an illness caused by EM waves from electronics was a major plot point. Gibson in turn got the idea from Pana-Wave, a Japanese cult who lived in the mountains, wore white robes and lived an austere…
on “Why Gates and Jobs shielded their kids from tech” ↗Didn't Bruce Sterling or William Gibson write a story where there was a street tribe called the "LoTeks?" I think it was William Gibson in the Johnny Mnemonic short story. Molly Millions fought a monomolecular weapon wielding assassin, using the LoTek's space to defeat him with "culture shock."
on “How to Build a Low-Tech Website” ↗William Gibson's "Burning Chrome". (Provided the rough skeleton for the movie "Johnny Mnemonic".) Appears in a collection of Gibson stories also titled Burning Chrome.
on “Ask HN: What are your favorite (sort) sci-fi stories with twists?” ↗Reading about the disease brought back to memory the "nerve attenuation syndrome" imagined by William Gibson in Johnny Mnemonic.
on “New Brunswick’s Mystery Disease” ↗…view he might have seemed like something less. I watched him swirling sluggishly in his galvanized tank. Water stopped over the side, wetting my shoes. He was surplus from the last war. A cyborg." - "Johnny Mnemonic", William Gibson - 1987

on “Quick Start Guide for Flipper Zero” ↗…movies made from PKD sources — https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_adaptations_of_works_b... I saw William Gibson read at Powell’s years ago, maybe around the Virtual Light era. Someone asked him about Johnny Mnemonic, about why Molly Millions wasn’t in it. He said something like, “I thought they were going to fuck up the movie, and if I’d let them write Molly into it then the studio would own her and I’d never be…
on “Will we finally see Neuromancer on the screen?” ↗I was just reading William Gibson's short-story collection, "Burning Chrome." The first story is "Johnny Mnemonic", and the last one (a story also titled "Burning Chrome") is supposed to be the very first use of the word cyberspace. And there's also three stories he co-wrote with other authors -- Bruce Sterling,…
on “Ask HN: What are your favorite sci-fi books?” ↗…me a lot of money. I had hundreds of megabytes stashed in my head on an idiot savant basis, information I had no conscious access to. Ralfi had left it there. He hadn't, however, came back for it." -- Johnny Mnemonic, William Gibson, 1981
on “European govt air-gapped systems breached using custom malware” ↗…better than a random man on the street. Instead of the standard good SF "Automobile => Traffic Jam" or the extraordinary "Automobile => Teenage fumblings in your dad's borrowed car" you get nonsense like Johnny Mnemonic. I strongly prefer very hard SF, so I was never Gibson's target audience anyway, but I find it just completely misses me, I might as well be reading a bodice ripper or special forces yarn.
on “Reading Neuromancer for the first time in 2025” ↗Yes! and Shadowrun! I remember just binging William Gibson after that, until Johnny Mnemonic, Hackers (the movie), and Strange Days, came out. What a great decade.
