Why HN recommends it
Standard introduction to image processing, grounded in signal processing and engineering with practical examples. Suits students and engineers new to the field, and a good base for convolution and filtering.

Image Processing: "Digital Image Processing", Gonzalez and Woods. Comprehensive coverage of principles, well written, practical w/ useful examples yet well grounded in signal processing and engineering principles. Complemented nicely by a version…
on “Ask HN: What are the best textbooks in your field of expertise?” ↗For that I suggest "Feature Extraction and Image Processing" 2.ed by Mark Nixon and Alberto S Aguado. But "Digital Image Processing" (DIP) by Gonzalez and Woods as suggested by monk_the_dog is pretty much the standard prereq. Actually DIP may get you what you need depending on how deep you need to go.
on “Ask HN: Image recognition books and resources” ↗If you are interested in image processing I recommend Digital Image Processing by Gonzalez and Woods. Great introduction to image processing. EDIT: Added title. I can't believe I googled the title to make sure I had the correct authors just to forget writing it here.
on “Show HN: Morphological image processing” ↗Done since the mid-1960's :) but, nevertheless, always an interesting read! This is classical (as in pre-GPU AI/ML) Image Processing. Reference text book "Digital Image Processing" by Gonzalez et al, shows how to do it: like the pioneers at JPL's Image Processing Laboratory (est. 1965) denoised Mars pictures from the Mariner probes using Frequency Domain methods like the posted…
on “Moiré No More” ↗There's a toolbox for Matlab that encapsulates a lot of digital image processing algorithms. Here's the text we used in my computer vision class, probably the classic in the field: http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Image-Processing-Rafael-Gonzal... Learning the specific feature space…
on “Jessica Fridrich Specializes in Problems That Only Seem Impossible to Solve” ↗Here's my list: For a general introduction: * "Digital Image Processing" by Gonzalez and Woods * "Image Processing, Analysis, and Machine Vision" by Sonka, Hlavac, and Boyle After you learn the basics, some more advanced and specialized books I'd recommend: * "Morphological…
on “Ask HN: Image recognition books and resources” ↗I've been reading digital image processing by Gonzalez and I must be honest: the sheer thickness of the book makes it very hard to handle (especially lying in bed). As others pointed out already, I do miss the ability of search the text. Good…
on “Reading texts on paper versus computer screen: Effects on reading comprehension [pdf] (2012)” ↗…better understanding of ML as a discipline makes the application of DL much more productive. Edit: Also would like to add a lot of people want to use DL for imaging stuff. Take some time to understand Digital Image Processing as well. It’s a good introduction to convolution and filtering. As well as just understanding what an image is and what can be done with it! This is just sort of advice from my path. The second book…
on “Ask HN: What Neural Networks/Deep Learning Books Should I Read?” ↗Feature Extraction and Image Processing looks pretty good. Do you think a beginner would be able to follow it without reading Digital Image Processing first?

on “Springer Nature offer free access to 500 essential textbooks” ↗An interesting application of the 2D DFT to manga on color eink Kaleido 3 with math theory explained! Kobo Colour images. Most of the slides are based on the DFT chapter in Digital Image Processing: A Practical Approach by Nick Efford. I learned DFT to understand this algorithm.
