Why HN recommends it

Explains white fragility, the defensive reactions white people often show when race is discussed. It helps readers understand privilege and why these conversations feel uncomfortable, especially for newcomers.

Common criticism: Critics see it as academic, one-sided, and overly accusatory toward white readers.

Summarised by Claude from recommending comments

White people in North America live in a social environment that protects and insulates them from race-based stress. This insulated environment of racial protection builds white expectations for racial comfort while at the same time lowering the ability to tolerate racial stress. Although white racial insulation is somewhat mediated by social class (with poor and working class urban whites being generally less racially insulated than suburban or rural whites), the larger social environment insulates and protects whites as a group through institutions, cultural representations, media, school te

…fathom it, but why you probably never will. Your choice, of course, but you shouldn't expect anybody to take your wilful ignorance as somehow meaningful. I'll again suggest you read DiAngelo's book on white fragility, though, as she covers a lot of the points you explicitly raise here.

…decisions are often made by homogeneous teams that lack diversity and perspective. If anyone wants a recommendation for reading to build up some knowledge about these issues I would recommend reading "White Fragility" by Robin DiAngelo. She does a great job breaking down lots of common misunderstandings white people have about race, and why those misunderstandings are created in the first place.

…it. But once you actually do the anti-racist work, you'll find that isn't really the problem. It's that white people generally become irrational and defensive whenever race comes up. See DiAngelo's "White Fragility" for more on this. Her 2011 academic paper on this is here: https://libjournal.uncg.edu/ijcp/article/viewFile/249/116 A pretty clear example is what happened with the phrase "Black Lives Matter". It…

Certainly black voices are best to understand the black experience. What I found useful from Robin DiAngelo was her description of white fragility.

[5] And I don't think an understanding of American racial dynamics is complete without a look at white fragility. DiAngelo recently did a talk about her excellent book that's a good intro. [6] I agree that America could be unique in the extent to which race matters historically and currently. But it's not like…

If you're interested in learning more about that dynamic, I strongly recommend this recent book: https://www.amazon.com/White-Fragility-People-About-Racism/d... …be an Anti-Racist. For the historical roots, Kendi's history of racist ideas, Stamped from the Beginning is fascinating, too. To understand the white pattern of reaction and erasure here, DiAngelo's, White Fragility is a good resource (as is her 2011 paper by the same name). If you think you can solve these problems via focus on just a generic injustice, feel free to take a swing at it. But I don't think white armchair…

The entire article is based on online group dynamics over people trying to figure out how to come to grips with historically ignored problems. I fail to feel outraged by this process. Is "White Fragility" without criticism? Probably not, I think it is a fantastic book, but it scares the bejeebers out of some people and we get instagram drama and articles like this which I interpret as another attempt…

Read the book, White Fragility (or just read the New Yorker article here, https://www.newyorker.com/books/page-turner/a-sociologist-ex...). Here's a thought. Suppose, just for a second, that racism is, in fact, cruel, absurd, and…

White guilt is the core of modern social justice - it's single consistent organizing principle. Read White Fragility or anything about anti-colonialism. There's no hatred against white people, not widespread enough to be notable at least - the book White Fragility talks about this imagined persecution though, I recommend it. I know you need to have the last word, and as I don't wish to engage further with people that have your ultimately hateful views, please go…
