I've moved enough times to have thinned my book collection down quite a bit. Books that I can't quit, the original "The Boy Mechanic" books, "The Complete Tales of Uncle Remus", "Jingo Django" (I have quite of few of Sid Fleischman's books, actually), a set of "The Book of a Thousands Nights and a Night" (the Arabian Nights) ... to name a few.

I know Disney pretends that "Song of the South" never existed, but Joel Chandler Harris' "The Tales of Uncle Remus" etc., includes a few stories where the animals meet their ends. Disney passed on those tales of course (leaving them as well out of the Disney book that followed the film and included additional Harris…

…Over the past so many years though a lot of books on archive.org (for example) are borrow only (and I like cultivating an offline-life). Here's an odd, maybe edge-case example. Joel Chandler Harris' Uncle Remus stories are clearly outside copyright. It's for sale on Amazon (the first link when I searched, becauseofcourseitis!) but I think we all know that the "copyright" on these published editions is only going…

I first heard of these reading Joel Chandler Harris' Uncle Remus stories. He called them "Wull-er-de-Wust" [1]. [1] https://www.gutenberg.org/files/24430/24430-h/24430-h.htm#V

…before they start middle school (junior high). When mine were young, I read to them every night before bed and they seemed to really enjoy it. We worked through, believe it or not, The Lord of the Rings, Uncle Remus stories, the Harry Potter series, The Hobbit, most of the Andrew Lang Fairie books, etc. But once they got past age 12, school got "real", smart phones landed in their hands and fairyland faded away.

…just kept going down hill—one after the other. As the girls were growing up we worked through all the Harry Potter books, a half-dozen of the "colored Fairy" books (edited by Andrew Lang), plenty of Uncle Remus tales, the "Little House" books and a number of Sid Fleischman books… Those were magical years. Only when homework arrived did the reading hour finally come to a close. :-(
