…Helped me out during the process of buying a house by understanding various negotiation gambits. Would recommend. Scrum - Another book that changed the way I work. Would absolutely recommend it. The Wizard of Oz - Much better than the movie. The 4-Hour Workweek - .... It was "okay". I don't know. I'm still torn. The Swiss Family Robinson - Awesome book, full of fun things to talk about with your kids. The…

There are also great children's authors in English - A.A. Milne, Oscar Wilde's stories, Mark Twain, Kipling, Baum (Wizard of Oz). All of these could be accessible at various stages within grades 2-5.

I found this interesting book on Project Gutenberg, by L. Frank Baum of "The Wizard of Oz" fame, about a girl and her brother doing an aircraft startup around 1911: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Flying_Girl I didn't realize they used the term "angel investor" even back then! Read and…

…times each. As a kid, I really enjoyed the rhyming, the zany drawings and some of the fantastic creatures like the wump (a 7+ hump camel) and the yink (that likes to wink and drink pink ink). I read The Wizard of Oz at least 5 times and the whole 12 books series three times. I read several Choose your own adventure books dozens of times (I particularly liked, Journey to the Year 3000), and the full set of Death Gate…

Interesting read. Barnum was quite a character, and might even be seen as a prototype of L. Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz: "'Barnum was right when he declared that the American people love to be deceived,' Baum once wrote of one of his heroes. Strikingly, even after the Wizard reveals his con, the Lion, the Tin Man, and…

Have you read the Wizard of Oz books? Radium is presented there as a cross between a magical source of power (more or less correct, in hindsight) and a medical panacea (nope). This also occurs in old Conan the Barbarian stories. Read…

You could also explain The Wizard of Oz as "young girl travels to a foreign land and kills the first person she meets. She then teams up with three strangers to kill again" The purpose of Thomas the Tank Engine is not to speculate on the ramifications…

According to Wikipedia and it's citations, William J. Bryan was satirized as the Cowardly Lion by L. Frank Baum in "The Wizard of Oz".

…very close to the original. Anyway my original claim holds - the children's literature of the USSR was very international and mostly free of ideology. There might have been a reason for retelling the Wizard of Oz - Baum had bad reputation as a racist AFAIK, and probably the Soviet government did not want to look bad leaving his name on the book's cover.

…were based on materials from the public domain. Were they uncreative for having not come up with a completely new story? The book series "Wicked" is a very popular revisionist telling of the original Wizard of Oz books. The copyright for the books (but not the movie!) lapsed just months after L Frank Baum's literary estate had come out of copyright. (Gregory Maguire, the author of Wicked, had thought it was decades…

Is it not okay for me to complain about the quality of Baum's "The Wizard of Oz", which I downloaded for free from https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/55 ? But, more to the point, Quanta is a nonprofit foundation-funded publication. It doesn't have subscriptions or advertisement. If…

The only example I can think of is "munchkin" which was apparently coined by Frank Baum for The Wizard of Oz.

    > “The Master Key,” where a boy wise beyond his years rejects powers too advanced for humanity to adapt. For those stumbling by- that's a 1901 novel by L. Frank Baum, who also wrote The Wizard Of Oz! Here's a synopsis: https://oz.fandom.com/wiki/The_Master_Key
