I felt that way about some of the standard documentation but was relieved to find: http://www.doughellmann.com/PyMOTW/ I also highly recommend checking out Doug Hellman's book 'The Python Standard Library by Example'. He presents every (or almost every) standard library module with simple explanations and plenty of examples.
on “The Python Standard Library - Where Modules Go To Die” ↗I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Doug Hellman's great resources. His book "The Python Standard Library by Example" is basically a print version of his PyMOTW project (http://www.doughellmann.com/PyMOTW/). While not an end to end "learn Python" the examples, at least in my case, have led me to ask quite a few questions…
on “Dive Into Python 3 (online book)” ↗…something in that direction. Do you want to learn computer sciences basics? You might want a data structures book. Do you just want to continue to learn the language and standard libraries? Doug Hellman's The Python Standard Library by Example is a good reference. Statistics? Web development? It depends.
on “Textbook manifesto (2016)” ↗If you'd prefer the material in print, Doug has written The Python Standard Library by Example. http://www.doughellmann.com/books/byexample/
on “Python Module of the Week” ↗This gap is very nicely filled by the Python Module of the Week series https://pymotw.com/3/ which focuses on examples rather than exhaustive docs. I believe the blog is coming out as a book called "Python standard library by example".
