on “San Francisco, now with more dystopia” ↗If this story piqued your interest in late Communist Poland, give Timothy Garton Ash a read. His "The Polish Revolution" is a great in depth account of the 1980/81 Polish uprising, and "The Magic Lantern" is a romping retelling of the last few months of Communist rule. Beautiful books.
on “A Western Kid Living in Communist Poland” ↗Off the top of my head, "Balkan Ghosts" by Robert D Kaplan might fit the latter criteria. If you're willing to stay within the realm of the revolutionary but stray a bit further north, "The Magic Lantern: The Revolution of 1989 Witnessed in Warsaw, Budapest, Berlin, and Prague" by Timothy Garton Ash is good. /r/AskHistorians' Book List might be cover pretty much anything else: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/wiki/books
