…grammars and clean action code. Odd thing is that I was stuck on 3 because 4 didn't support C yet and then I just switched to the Java target in an anti-C pique. Shoulda done that awhile ago. TParr's The Definitive ANTLR 4 Reference is quite good. And so's this mega tutorial. https://pragprog.com/book/tpantlr2/the-definitive-antlr-4-re... ANTLR is my goto tool for DSLs.

…https://pragprog.com/titles/tpantlr2/the-definitive-antlr-4-... and at least 1 more of his, forget where it is. I would say it is ageless (at least, until something better than ANTLR comes along—ohm is promising but not sure what the latest is with that). "The Definitive ANTLR 4 Reference" is absolutely the most understated title I've ever seen in a book. It's really more like "The Book That Will Change How you Look at Programming Languages Forever" IMO anyway. I guess it depends on how…

…made a run at that a couple of times, but it seems to theoretical for me to do anything useful with it. I've been thinking about taking a go at creating something with ANTLR alone with the books The Definitive ANTLR 4 Reference and Language Implementation Patterns, but I'm not sure if I'll have much more luck there. If anyone knows of a better path to get from here (can't design my own language) to there (clarity and understanding)…

…this book may be for you but don't expect to be able to do much useful after reading it. It really is just the 50,000 ft view. I was disappointed because I wanted to get my hands dirty and so I got The Definitive ANTLR Reference a day or two later. While it has nothing like the breadth of Fowler's DSLs it has enough depth to be very useful. http://www.pragprog.com/titles/tpantlr/the-definitive-antlr-...
