Are you referring to Cartesian dualism? Have you read Gilbert Ryle's "The Concept of Mind" (1949) [0]? This is a very old and tired argument. The form you seem to be endorsing has fallen out of favor in philosophy circles. For an intuitive understanding of why interactionist dualism is…

…before and don't know what compelled me to try today. It was rewarding! Pretty much every thread had new ideas not discussed in previous threads. One quick takeaway: it seems like reading Ryle's The Concept of Mind is a good next step for going deeper on this topic.

The Concept of Mind (1949) I started reading this a couple of weeks ago after seeing it referenced in Peter Naur’s “Programming as Theory Building”, and this point of his in particular keeps coming up in all sorts of contexts:…

So is it a joke on "Gilbert Ryle: The Concept of Mind"? But it just reiterates his first example using breakfast instead of university... 'The first example is of a visitor to Oxford. The visitor, upon viewing the colleges and library, reportedly inquired…

…you're porting. by theory i mean an intuition of what the software is, what motivates its existence, what it ought to do. to define the term "theory" by an example from the paper (or possibly from "the concept of mind" by gilbert ryle, referenced by "programming as theory building"): you don't have newton's theory when you can answer a question that he answered the way he answered it, you have newton's theory when…

…with Theory here. Quoting from the paper: "What will be considered here is the suggestion that the programmers' knowledge properly should be regarded as a theory, in the sense of Ryle [Gilbert Ryle, The Concept of Mind, 1946]. Very briefly, a person who has or possesses a theory in this sense knows how to do certain things and in addition can support the actual doing with explanations, justifications, and answers to…

This is a gem, I'm glad I read the whole thing. But the real gem is learning about Ryle and the book "The Concept of mind" which sounds very interesting that I'll add to my read-list The ideas here are useful even outside of programming.
