…essay to educate yourself. That's what you need to do to be able to think clearly about big topics. Reading the law will only just get you started. It makes sense to read The Federalist Papers, The Communist Manifesto, The Republic, and many other cornerstones of thinking about this instead of demanding that someone distill thousands of years of thought into a HN comment. > My point is fact, and stands: It isn't…

…seems to be nearly all novels, with a few plays and poems. No Euclid's Geometry, no Herodotus Histories, no Bible or Koran, no Samuelson's Economics or Smith's Wealth of Nations, no Plato's Republic, no Communist Manifesto, no Leviathan or Rights of Man, no On the Origin of Species. Just off the top of my head. All of those and more are arguably in the top 100 greatest books of of all time.

…entertain. Terry Pratchett's Tiffany Aching arc is good for younger kids, with the later books having the star character as a young teen. For nonfiction that isn't just math/science/technology, how about the Communist Manifesto?

Mein Kampf is pretty long and, frankly, boring (unlike The Communist Manifesto that reads like a poem).

Run Silent, Run Deep. The Communist Manifesto The Christian Manifesto From Dawn to Decadence. Romance of the 7 kingdoms. Life together. There's a big yellow book about the 6 day war, it's very detailed and blow by blow, I can no longer remember…

…nationalist produced heavily biased works which are not suitable as a base for a curriculum. That does not mean they should not be discussed, it just means they should not be leading the discussion. Reading the Communist Manifesto does not make you a Communist after all, reading Mein Kampf does not make you a National Socialist, reading the Quotations of Chairman Mao does not make you a Maoist. I say read them all and discuss their…

…the attack is a bit strange. 2. Rand makes some points that some people need to learn, even if I don't buy her whole worldview. Exactly. This is the same reason that I have copies of Mein Kampf, The Communist Manifesto and Mao's Little Red Book on my shelf waiting to be read. I don't have to agree with a work to find benefit in reading it. Quite the opposite... I believe that if I'm going to argue against something,…

Yes and no. There was this book called The Communist Manifesto. The government of China doesn't look very much like the book. So, not communist. But China is ruled by the Chinese Communist Party. So yes, communist, at least by their own declaration. (You see…

The depth of ignorance on display here is staggering. Why not read The Communist Manifesto and Das Kapital instead of making a fool of yourself?

And what, exactly, is a "trained Marxist"? Can they quote chapter and verse of Capital and The Communist Manifesto from memory? Having spent a few years on the Fediverse, I've found that "the left" in the US consists mainly of book clubs and struggle sessions. The book clubs just read and debate theory ad nauseum.…

  • The problem is censorship. Say something the powerful disagree with and it will be judged offensive. You should be able to publish Animal Farm or the Communist Manifesto without being "edited" until your book simply affirms the status quo.
