I love vintage game programming books. Just finished "Gardens of Imagination" by Christopher Lampton, and "The Black Art of 3D Game Programming" by Andre Lamothe. Lots of good info in both for my raycaster pet project.
on “Technical Time Travel: On Vintage Programming Books” ↗I can recommend the black art of 3d game programming, don’t remember by who, it’s this muscle guy :) and the series called “code on the cob”, by Chris Hargrove, while he was working at 3d realms
on “Game Engine Black Book: Doom [pdf]” ↗This and "The Black Art of 3D Game Programming" were my two favorites from my childhood! https://archive.org/details/BlackArt3DEBook
on “Build Your Own Flight SIM in C++” ↗…reality, it was an overrated and ultimately terrible book (amonth the other things, LaMothe's approach to the topic is misguided for several reasons, including using Assembly instead of better algorithms). "Black Art of 3D game programming" is a good book instead, and also relatively relevant today, for those who want to understand the basics of 3d. It also goes in detail in explaining BSP trees, whose implementation is considerably more…
on “Game Engine Black Book: Doom [pdf]” ↗Yes, it's amazing how many game development techniques appeared and faded out in the 90s, in that window of time between fast-enough CPUs and affordable GPUs. I have a copy of the Black Art of 3D Game Programming on my shelf and it's full of awesome tidbits. I recently browsed flipcode.com and sadly parts of it are broken and only available thanks to the Internet Archive.
on “Ray-Casting Tutorial for Game Development and Other Purposes (1996)” ↗Has nothing to do with N64. It's just basic software renderer and a .obj/.bmp loader. I made one of these when I was 12 after reading "The black art of 3d game programming" which was designed for dos games.
on “N64 object software renderer in 512 lines” ↗…my current collection from that era (always on the lookout for more): - tricks of the game programming gurus - more tricks of the game programming gurus - tricks of the 3D game programming gurus - black art of 3D game programming - tricks of the windows game programming gurus - game programming gems - AI game programming wisdom - designing virtual worlds - gardens of imagination - flights of fantasy - cutting-edge 3D game…
