Over the summer I went through an alternative teacher certification program. The program focused a lot on the techniques in Doug Lemov's book, Teach Like a Champion. I have implemented a few of Lemov's techniques and they have been very helpful in managing classroom behavior.
on “Doug Lemov believes great teachers are made, not born” ↗…effective high school teacher "how do you do it?" What could they tell you? It took a lot of work to learn how to teach: experimentation, analysis, etc...you simply have to learn how to teach! Take a look at Teach Like a Champion 2.0 by Lemov. It answers this precise question! (http://www.amazon.com/Teach-Like-Champion-2-0-Techniques/dp/...).

on “Stay focused - New research on how to close the achievement gap” ↗…answer would be "the value of 5 in 582 is 500 because the 5 is in the hundreds place". This distinction is something that many teachers overlook. There is an excellent handbook for teachers called "Teach Like A Champion" [1] which emphasises that "Right is Right" - here is an excerpt: --------------------------------- Right Is Right is about the difference between partially right and all-the-way right—between pretty…

on “Step 1: give every kid a laptop. Step 2: learning begins?” ↗…don't grow up with the advantages I grew up with in suburban Minnesota and Wisconsin. I suggest readers of Hacker News take a look at the research originating in that organization, especially the book Teach Like a Champion, http://www.josseybass.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-0470... for ideas about how to fix the problems mentioned in the article submitted here.
…"ignore your needs!" don't last (I think they lead to burnout) because they don't address psychology. I don't know the solution, but I'll hazard: teachers need more methods, better curricula, more support. Teach Like a Champion is the one of the best books on practical teaching, and on human relations I've ever read. Unfortunately, "don't worry about it!" is as impractical as "teachers and society must improve!" But like I…

There is much interesting research on this coming from the charter school movement, with some of the best how-to research coming from the Teach Like a Champion[3] project. I love learning about new ways to be a more effective teacher. Besides actual teacher skills, another grave problem in United States school is extremely poor teaching materials[4] and I devote…
