Sure, although if you want to read the Torah / Tanakh as Jews understand it, I wouldn't just pick up a Bible. Assuming you don't read Hebrew, I'd get the New Jewish Publication Society translation.
on “Neil DeGrasse Tyson’s Eight Books Everyone Should Read” ↗…anecdote. What version would you recommend? I'm a little biased here, but if you want to explore the religious content of the Bible, just chuck out the Bible and go to Jewish commentaries on the Torah and Tanakh. Plaut's 'The Torah: A Modern Commentary' and Lieber's 'Etz Hayim' are good places to start.
on “Neil DeGrasse Tyson’s Eight Books Everyone Should Read” ↗If you're reading the bible, you might like Abelard, Sic et Non. Also: Tanakh commentary.

The Moral Animal, the Moral Landscape, The Blank Slate, The Republic and Plato’s writings on Socrates, Tao te Ching, Meditations by Marcus Aurelius, the Tanakh and parts of the Talmud, but many of these were more academic, still holistically they have shaped my thinking and moral compass.
on “Ask HN: What books influenced your moral compass?” ↗…https://scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/182014/why-does-th... But seriously, little inconsistencies like these make me think Star Wars was just meant to be a kids’ movie and not a sacred document to be handed down and analyzed by generations like the Tanakh or something.
on “We Dare You to Explain Luke’s Plan to Rescue Han in ‘Return of the Jedi’” ↗This reads to me like saying "the best way to determine if god exists is to read the hebrew bible, the koran, and the book of mormon and take the average". It starts with the assumption left, right, and centrist sources all have biases, but those biases cancel out. That the "middle" of those things…
on “Nothing can now be believed which is seen in a newspaper (1807)” ↗In the Tanakh, Satan is "The Adversary". And to me, it always seems that he almost necessarily existed by gods will and permission in order to provide god with an agent. The Adversary almost seemed a force of nature,…

Take us and our land in exchange for bread, and we with our land will be serfs to Pharaoh; provide the seed, that we may live and not die, and that the land may not become a waste.’ (JPS Tanakh, 2000) “Smoothing out the ravages of the business cycle” indeed. What Mr. Ruby ignores, and what the text devotes many verses to emphasizing, is that central planning of the kind undertaken by Joseph…
on “Open Letter from Governments to Facebook Is an All-Out Attack on Encryption” ↗> That’s why we read the Hebrew bible out loud Do you have any resources for someone who wants to learn Biblical Hebrew? I desire to be able to read the original languages.
on “Translating the Bible is a vexed task” ↗…that Judaism was surpassed by Christianity as the predominant western religion because of its failure to embrace the printing press, but I would point out to you that a.) I own a lovely bound copy of the Tanakh, published by the JPS and available from Amazon for the low low price of $23.10, b.) the total number of adherents of Christianity had leapfrogged Judaism by at the latest the 4th century--a full millennium…
on “Will books survive? A scorecard.” ↗Did I interpret this correctly? The technician saw the name Nebuchadnezzar and assumed it was a reference to a ship (perhaps from The Matrix) and not the infamous Chaldean emperor from the Tanakh?
on “Destined To Fail” ↗Elves are totally mentioned in Genesis 6. As in, Genesis, chapter 6, in the Tanakh? I've never heard of that one before. Ancient Hebrew culture had no notion of elves whatsoever, to my knowledge. Is this a joke, or can you cite chapter+verse?
on “My Father's "Eviscerated" work - Son of J.R.R. Tolkien finally speaks out” ↗Just a note: the Torah is a subset of the Tanakh, which is itself a subset of the Bible. (Christians refer to the Torah as the Pentateuch and the Tanakh as the Old Testament.)
on “Neil DeGrasse Tyson’s Eight Books Everyone Should Read” ↗…to teach Aristotelian social theory and starts out at the married household level. Is this discrimination? Is this a one-way street? My English summer reading one year was the first five books of the Tanakh. Lots of slavery, genocide, passing around women like property, etc. We also read the first chapter of Mein Kampf in German, and excerpts from the Communist Manifesto in History. Teaching ideas is not…
on “Germany Seizes Children in Homeschool Raid” ↗There have been quite a few times that science has confirmed accounts in the Tanakh and New Testament ... large portions of both are dedicated to conveying history regardless of whether you believe in the spiritual aspects described.
