What Hacker News says

  • …Alan Dean Foster -- who I believe was actually consulting with Lucas while the movie was in production, and had some influence on what we actually saw on screen. Foster wrote a sequel to Star Wars called Splinter of the Mind's Eye which was originally intended to be the story used for the second movie. Having said all that, I would put fairly high odds on Disney ignoring the "Expanded Universe" stuff and actually going with whatever…

Lucas definitely had sequels in mind, but it was very much in doubt whether the movie would succeed. There was an official sequel novel by Alan Dean Foster called Splinter of the Mind's Eye released in '78, which was explicitly designed to be filmable on a very low budget if the original didn't do too well. That does feature Luke duelling Vader with his saber.

Also interesting to note that Alan Dean Foster wrote Splinter of the Mind's Eye, which was written as a sort of backup plan for The Empire Strikes Back. If Star Wars flopped at the box office, Lucas would adapt Splinter into a low-budget sequel to Star Wars.

I'm guessing around 10 years old (but perhaps even earlier) when I decided to design and build a briefcase containing various hidden compartments. I also remember, before that, reading Splinter of the Mind's Eye and being impressed that Luke could recharge his lightsaber from Han's blaster and spent a long time working on designs for universal plugs and sockets that would allow arbitrary recharging between devices.…

…large group of people who like EU from this thing, but not from that thing. And it can't be ignored that Lucasfilm threw the EU under the bus with the Prequels, and even before that with things like Splinter of the Mind's Eye. The thing that's hard is when you've invested a lot of time and energy into something, and then the owner comes along and breaks your heart. Here's to finding love again.
