Siddharta - Herman Hesse Sometimes when I feel a bit sad I remind myself to read a few chapters. It reminds me what I find important in life. What I can ask from myself and from other. It gives me joy in a good…
on “Ask HN: What books changed the way you think about almost everything?” ↗…on some classics: - War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy - Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky - 1984 by George Orwell - The Village by Ivan Bunin - The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov - Siddharta by Hermann Hesse I read quite a bit and love it; if only I could be paid to do it at my own pace and rhythm!
on “Ask HN: What are you reading?” ↗Most books by Hermann Hesse, really... Narziss&Goldmund changed my perspective on life. If you have anything artistic in you, it's a must-read. Steppenwolf, Siddharta and the Glass Bead Game are other must-reads. Gabriel Garcia Marques, One hundred years of solitude. Practically all of Jorge Luis Borges' short stories. Mind-bending. Milan Kundera's Unbearable Lightness…
on “Ask HN: Good books?” ↗…as "coming of age" topics. Still I can recommend them to anyone with an open mind or willing to open their mind or change perspectives. For instance if you are into eastern thinking there's the famous "Siddharta". One of my personal favourites is "Narcissus and Goldmund", which sketches the relationship between two young men who represent an "artistic" and a "scientific" way of thinking and life.
on “Herman Hesse: Outside Man” ↗A book that was life changing to me was "Siddharta" from Herman Hesse . It taught me in a subtle way about what's really important instead of just material stuff
on “Ask HN: Which books have made you introspect?” ↗…like Siddartha by HH. The lessons are there, but the interpretation is open and the narrative is not compromised. You start reading it and you don't want to stop reading it because you're now part of Siddharta's journey. You’re no expecting the punch line that has the lesson, you simply live the story and therefore live the lesson.
on “Ask HN: Mind bending books to read and never be the same as before?” ↗Demian by Hermann Hesse. I wanted to scream "Stop overthinking!" to the protagonist. Something I can relate to. Siddharta by Hermann Hesse. Helped me understand that a perfect life is a collection of ups and downs and that one must accept it all. Amerika by Franz Kafka. Could relate to the protagonist because people take…
on “Ask HN: What did you read in 2025?” ↗Glass Bead Game by Herman Hesse I assume? If you want to try more Herman Hesse I preferred Demian & Siddharta far over Glass Bead game (read in German though, can't speak for translations).
on “Ask HN: What did you read in 2025?” ↗I must admit I was a bit disappointed with Siddharta. Obviously the ideas in it are deep and very interesting but as a novel it doesn't really have much to hold it together.
on “Herman Hesse: Outside Man” ↗I had some troubles ages ago and one of my bosses hinted me to read the Siddharta by Herman Hesse. Today I wouldn't remember a single word about the book, but back then I liked it a lot although I experienced it from an atheist point of view. Did it solve my problems? Not at all since…
on “Trying to Convince People to Change (2016)” ↗Yeah, I too finally read Siddharta. It might have had a bigger impact on younger me. Older me feels like I could have written it. ;-)
