Why HN recommends it
Introduction to the MIPS architecture and its internals, covering assembly programming and how a RISC CPU works. It also serves as a reference for Linux porting and kernel-level MIPS work.

The versatile offspring of an extended family of multiple chip companies, today's MIPS chips are everywhere. They power everything from video games, network routers, laser printers, and set-top boxes, to high-performance workstations. This book brings together this extraordinary proliferation of form and functionality, offering embedded systems programmers and designers unique, eminently practical insights into MIPS. It covers how MIPS started, the principles at the root of the RISC revolution, the full details of the MIPS instruction set, and how these details together constitute a full opera

MIPS is a really fun assembly language to learn IMO. I liked the book See MIPS Run by Dominic Sweetman.
on “Introduction to MIPS assembly language (2007)” ↗Don't start with the x86 or -64 architecture; there's a lot of cruft in there due to backwards compatibility. Start with a simpler architecture like MIPS (see e.g., Sweetman's "See MIPS Run" for an introduction), or the old 6800 chips (few extant examples in the wild not attached to old Macs -- unless you are willing to pay exorbitant prices because you're maintaining an old weapons system…
on “Introduction to x64 Assembly (2011) [pdf]” ↗Check this "See MIPS Run" book on porting Linux to MIPS [1]. Since MIPS has becomes RISC-V, it will be an excellent reference to Linux on RISC-V platform [2]. [1]https://www.amazon.com/Morgan-Kaufmann-Computer-Architecture...…

If you want to know more about the MIPS architecture I highly recommend "See MIPS Run" by Dominic Sweetman: http://www.amazon.com/Morgan-Kaufmann-Computer-Architecture-...

Lot of things have changed since its publication. * See MIPS Run by Dominic Sweetman: dated but gives good idea about MIPS internals and how Linux uses it. * IA-64 Linux Kernel: Design and Implementation: Its dated not just w.r.t code but also w.r.t. hardware.
