A similar idea to what was used for travel in the hard sci Fi novel series “Rocheworld” (highly recommended)
on “New solar sail may travel to Alpha Centauri” ↗…Forward did in "Flight of the Dragonfly [1]: it includes 30+ pages and 12 figures with technical details. He worked it all out at the level of a real mission proposal. [1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rocheworld
on “Bringing Chinese Science Fiction to the West” ↗I think all of Robert Forward's stuff would qualify. My favorites are Rocheworld (AKA The Flight of the Dragonfly) - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rocheworld and Dragon's Egg - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon%27s_Egg
on “Ask HN: Best hard scifi AI novels?” ↗This reminds me of a sci-fi book I read when I was a kid called Rocheworld by Robert Forward. They were going to the Barnard Star, but it had binary planets where one was all water. Good book (if I recall)..
on “Water found on a potentially life-friendly alien planet” ↗It's one of my favorite books. Another great Forward read is Rocheworld. Forward was a physicist, and created settings that only a physicist would be likely to think of.
on “Ask HN: Teach me something new” ↗…wise old floating robot/AI that uses fields to manipulate things (Culture drones). This reminds me of Interstellar, where I recognised the books that the authors had taken their influences from, such as Rocheworld by Robert L. Forward, which also features helpful robots that fold up with arms that have smaller-and-smaller subunits.
on “Ask HN: What are you reading these days?” ↗Physicist Robert L. Forward mentioned it in his book Rocheworld (later republished as The Flight of the Dragonfly)in the early 1980's, with the concept work being done in the 1970s. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_sail#Interstellar_flight
on “NASA proposes new propulsion to cut Mars voyage to 3 days” ↗…rocket, or some equivalent thereof to stop going, whenever you get to your destination. False. Robert Forward has a technique for deceleration for interstellar lightsail craft, which is described in Rocheworld and one of his science books. Magsails using beamed particle propulsion can also exploit the interstellar medium to decelerate without onboard fuel. Not an issue for flybys, but an issue if you want…
on “The Tyranny of the Rocket Equation (2012)” ↗In the book Rocheworld, they do just that. The light sail splits in two, with the outer portion curving to reflect light from the propulsion laser back onto the inner portion to slow down the ship.
on “US scientists find potentially habitable planet near Earth” ↗Interesting! Thanks. No I have not. Although I was previously recommended Rocheworld by a former NASA researcher, with the note that Robert L. Forward made every effort to describe a scientifically plausible double planet. Incidentally, it looks like Dragon’s Egg is his only work available…
