Why HN recommends it
Cozy, character-driven science fiction set in a richly built universe. The characters are sympathetic and the mood is relaxed, suited to readers who want to settle into a slower, low-action story.

Centuries after the last humans left Earth, the Exodus Fleet is a living relic, a place many are from but few outsiders have seen. Humanity has finally been accepted into the galactic community, but while this has opened doors for many, those who have not yet left for alien cities fear that their carefully cultivated way of life is under threat.

Lots of great recommendations here. I'll add the Wayfarers series by Becky Chambers: - The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet - A Closed and Common Orbit - Record of a Spaceborn Few (Her more recent "To Be Taught, If Fortunate" is unrelated to the series but also a great read.) EDIT: Formatting.
on “Ask HN: Best books you read in the past decade?” ↗It actually is used in at least one sci fi novel, although not at all dystopian, Becky Chambers 3rd wayfarer novel: Record of a spaceborn few. I read the first 3 and highly recommend them, the world (universe?) building is wonderful, and the characters are sympathetic and well written. I'm saving the next one for when I next feel down, there's…
on “Oregon has legalized human composting” ↗Becky Chambers explores the idea of composting humans in Record of a Spaceborn Few. It's the third book in her Wayfarer series, but I think it would work as a stand-alone novel if you aren't looking to read two books before you get to the one that discusses composting humans.
on “To Be a Field of Poppies: turning cadavers into compost” ↗…similar relaxed vibe and a very deep world to spend time in. If you're looking for action, it won't satisfy, but if you just want to be somewhere else for a while, it's great. I particularly enjoyed "Record of a Spaceborn Few," the third in the series.
on “Crown shyness” ↗I really liked "Record of a Spaceborn Few", but the entire Wayfarer series is pretty good. I think technically it's a sequel to the first one, but IIRC it doesn't really matter which order you read them in, you may just not be sure once or twice…
on “A Guide for Prospective Tea Monks” ↗Reminds me of Record of a spaceborn few, a book by Becky Chambers. It goes into detail how on a generation ship the bodies are composted and become nutrients to grew new food upon.
on “Don't bury or cremate – soon you may compost your corpse” ↗
