Noir by KW Jeter https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noir_(novel) My username isn't a co-incidence.
on “Ask HN: What are the best books you've read that few others have?” ↗Speaking of spines and copyright issues: In K W Jeter's excellent dark cyberpunk novel "Noir", intellectual property theft is viewed as literally killing people by removing their livelihood, so copyright violators were punished by having their still-living spinal cords stripped out and made into…
on “Scanning books at 250 pages a minute (2008)” ↗…and senselessly optimistic. Vinge's "True Names" stands out. Maybe When H.A.R.L.I.E. Was One for the AI side of things. The amusing Headcrash, writings by Pat Cadigan, Jeter's deliciously dystopian Noir is a favorite if you want to see how bad it might get. Hardwired, by Walter Jon Williams, but that one has been a while.

on “How much bandwidth does the spinal cord have?” ↗…on an epic book, and written by a friend and author PKD respected, who's written some other excellent books. And while you're at it, check out Dr. Adder and K. W. Jeter's other books too! Especially Noire, for its hi-fi cables made out of the still-living spinal columns of copyright violators. (I suggest you buy a copy and don't pirate it!) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blade_Runner_2:_The_Edge_of_Hu...…
on “Electric Sheep on Ubuntu Linux 17.10” ↗Speaking of high quality "Monstrous Cables" and draconian legal remedies: there's K. W. Jeter's Noir (1998), a Cyberpunk novel whose detective protagonist's main job is killing copyright violators so that their still-living spinal cords may be incorporated into hi-fi system cables: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=15668069…
