Why HN recommends it

Practical guidance on pitfalls and good practice in C++, aimed at readers past the basics who want to write better code. Clearly written with some humor; its idioms are also seen as useful beyond C++.

Summarised by Claude from recommending comments

Meyers includes proven methods for improving program efficiency, comprehensive descriptions of advanced techniques such as virtual constructors, proxy classes and double-dispatching, and examples of the profound impact of exception handling.

"More Effective C++" by Scott Meyers While directed at the C++ crowd, I would recommend this book to any programmer, as it explains many interesting concepts and idioms that are not C++ specific.

Start by learning C. The best way to learn C is by reading The C Programming Language by Kernighan and Ritchie. Then read Effective C++, More Effective C++, and Effective STL by Scott Meyers. Then move on to Exceptional C++, More Exceptional C++, and and Exceptional C++ Style by Herb Sutter. Stay away from Alexandrescu's books. Template meta-programming…

If you are already further in and not at the beginning of learning C++ there is a list of books I recommend as further readings: - Effective C++ by Scott Meyers - More Effective C++ by Scott Meyers - Effective STL by Scott Meyers --- - Exceptional C++ by Herb Sutter - More Exceptional C++ by Herb Sutter - Exceptional C++ Style by Herb Sutter --- - C++ Templates - The Complete…

…inputs do I expect and what happens if I get something unexpected? How hard will this be to update? How hard will this be to debug if things go wrong? For a novice I'd suggest reading Effective C++ and More Effective C++ by Scott Meyers. Read a point or two a week and really focus on using them in your coding that week. This will help you build up good habits. A lot of good coding is good habits accumulated over time.…

I used to swear by Meyers in my old C++ days; his Effective C++ and More Effective C++ were my favorite software books. But recently, in the course of catching up with modern C++, I got the impression his ideas aren't considered good in the current community anymore. Can anyone comment…

If you're into C++, definitely check out the books by Scott Meyers (Effective C++, More Effective C++, Effective STL). They're not "how to get started" books, they are "how to fix the stuff you are doing wrong" books. He is very insightful and writes very clearly. He also has a sense of humor, so…

…English original. Speaking of computing and translations: the most annoying case I've had was not with UIs, but with books. Back in the day, I bought two C++ books by Scott Meyers (Effective C++ and More Effective C++), both published in Polish, and each by a different publisher. In the first one, they translated "template" -> "szablon" and "pattern" -> "wzorzec", and in the other, they translated "template" -> "wzorzec"…

You don't. By the time you've read a few of those books, the rest will be rather boring. I also wouldn't bother with Effective STL or More Effective C++. They're ancillary to the main books of that series and are somewhat outdated.
