After multiple attempts over 25 years, I'm giving it another go this year and this time it is actually clicking. - Malicious Cryptography: Exposing Cryptovirology - Adam Young, Moti Yung This is way out of my league in terms of cryptography, but this fascinated me early in my career, and led me to implement one or the other algorithm.…
on “Quirky computing books” ↗This is exactly what PIR is for. A good intro is chapter 6 of the (awesome and ahead-of-its-time) book Malicious Cryptography. One of the authors works at the agency now, I believe.

Not about dishonest cryptographers per se, but about various sneaky tricks that could be used in crypto systems. Anyway I'm sure you remember the notorious Dual EC DRBG.
on “Encryption at Rest: Whose Threat Model Is It Anyway?” ↗Cheers, that's very interesting! I bought this book a while ago - 'Malicious Cryptography: Exposing Crytovirology' I still need to read it more thoroughly but they present some interesting ideas.
