Published in one volume, Flora Thompson's trilogy of life in rural England in the 1890's -- Lark Rise, Over to Candleford, and Candleford Green. The childhood and adolescence of an English country girl growing up in a world of privation and poverty that was at that time taken for granted. The descriptions of a long-ago way of life are eloquent, moving, and full of sorrow for that which has been lost forever.

The peasants in Brueghel paintings are having a lot of rough, unsophisticated fun. That doesn't mean we should not be grateful for (say) modern dentistry! Of course we…

…naturally are cheerleading for AI, then there's the HN collective who hate every new release of MacOS and every AI model, just on principle! I understand the fear, anyone who's ever read Flora Thompson's Lark Rise to Candleford will see the parallels, things are changing, AI is the plough, the railway, the transistor... I'm tired on the debate, my experience is that AI (Gemini for me) is awesome, we all have gaps in our knowledge/skills…

…book by the way: 'Time to Eat the Dog?: The Real guide to Sustainable Living' by Thames & Hudson - search it up if you want a read. We essentially need to return to a lifestyle that is described by the 'Lark Rise to Candleford' Trilogy, with comparatively recent local communities in 'developed' countries growing their own food, helping each other, making their own entertainment, travelling little, and generally living within…
