How about: 'Introduction to the New Mainframe: z/OS Basics' http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg246366.html?Open This, and the 'ABCs of Systems Programming' series were pretty good I thought.

I'm not sure what you mean by "decent technical documentation describing things". IBM is very open about publishing their documentation. For instance "Introduction to the New Mainframe: z/OS Basics" is available here: http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/Redbooks.nsf/RedbookAbstracts/sg... I'm not saying that this makes it easy to get access to, which is still a real problem.
