I wrote Hello Web App to teach web app development with Python and Django: https://hellowebbooks.com/learn-django The HTML version of the book is free: https://hellowebbooks.com/tutorial/ Proud to have a 5 star rating with…
on “Ask HN: Best resources to learn django in 2017?” ↗…bad advice. I've happily paid for indie books in the past few years from authors I trust because I want to read their perspective and information that they've curated. Two I'll mention in particular: Hello Web App by Tracy Osborn - This is a book about web design, which is discussed in millions of places, but Tracy's book gathers together high-quality information in a concise book. Starting & Sustaining by Garrett…
on “Show HN: DevBooks – Help Developers find indy books” ↗…exactly what I paid for - not some excuse why I was paying an extra $20 to receive it only a month before everyone else can get it on Amazon much cheaper. I never questioned for a second my purchase of "Hello Web App", but the little girl that I bought "Hello Ruby" for is going to be almost too old for the book finally being delivered.
For beginners, I recommend either "Hello, Web App"[0], or "Two Scoops of Django"[1]. [0] https://hellowebapp.com/ [1] https://www.twoscoopspress.com/products/two-scoops-of-django...
on “Ask HN: Which books are the best to learn Python Django?” ↗…don't know if I would recommend it for someone looking to learn Django for the first time as it is more of a reference. For someone completely new to Django I'd likely recommend Tango with Django or Hello Web App
on “Django 1.11 beta 1 released” ↗I bought Tracy's "Hello Web Design" book and it's fantastic! I would assume the Hello Web App book is also quite good.
on “Ask HN: “Write your own” or “Build your own” software projects” ↗…question (not related to my side project). I maintain a list of my eBook library where I put the following information about the eBooks I have (data for this book in parentheses): Publisher (Leanpub), Title (Hello Web App), Authors (Tracy Osborn), Published (), Purchased (2015-07-08), Last known update (2015-05-08), Catalog Page (http://leanpub.com/hellowebapp), Read duration (). As you can see, I was unable to determine…
on “I self-published a learn-to-code book and made nearly $5k in pre-orders” ↗I wrote Hello Web App to teach Django + Python web app development by talking readers through creating a unique project (using a project template described in the tutorial): https://hellowebbooks.com/learn-django I'm actually…
on “Ask HN: “Write your own” or “Build your own” software projects” ↗…idea to keep doing that, then lateral into a place of employment. I think the likelihood of making a living as an indie developer is greater than as an indie on the App Store for example. Tracy Osborn (Hello Web App) said herself that one book wouldn't provide a living, though she surmised that someone with multiple books might. The speaking engagements, networking, and new opportunities will help overall in filling…
on “Ask HN: Is it possible to live off technical writing?” ↗I wrote Hello Web App and Hello Web App: Intermediate Concepts (http://hellowebapp.com, they're learn-to-build-a-web-app books using Django) and self-published both in 2015. Just checked and this year I've made about $13,000…
on “Ask HN: What was your best passive income in 2016?” ↗Another personal datapoint — I wrote a book and funded it on Kickstarter as well (similarly named: Hello Web App) and mine was 12 months delayed. Producing a book was definitely way harder than I anticipated, esp. as I am used to the fast-turnaround times of producing something for the web. Additionally, printing…
A couple of years ago I wrote Hello Web App (http://hellowebapp.com) to teach beginner Django web app development. It's aimed at non-programmers and designers, and walks folks through building and deploying a basic web app. I'm working on my third…
on “Show HN: My Django book, Hello Web App, is now free online” ↗…issue is time, since I'm still running my startup solo. Second biggest is potential revenue, since my salary for WeddingLovely is currently at $0 (long story) so I'm supporting myself completely on what Hello Web App is bringing in. Thanks for the fun questions!
on “I self-published a learn-to-code book and made nearly $5k in pre-orders” ↗Hey HN — I've done a couple Show HN's for my first book, Hello Web App (http://hellowebapp.com): My first Kickstarter: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7699291 Launch of Hello Web App: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9329942 Since launch, Hello Web App has had…
