Why HN recommends it
Broad overview of the fusion field and its history, written by two fusion researchers. It is technical enough to be substantive yet accessible to general readers seeking the state of the field.

That's a really good book. Another one that is also very good is "The Future of Fusion Energy" which has lots on modern methods. https://www.amazon.com/Future-Fusion-Energy-Jason-Parisi/dp/... Also well worth checking are the podcasts 'Physical Attraction' which has done many episodes on fusion…
on “A Commercial Path to Fusion” ↗…literature, but “Plasma Physics and Fusion Energy” by Friedberg is considered the go-to book in my group. Also, regardless of whether or not you make a big life change, I highly recommend that you read “The Future of Fusion Energy” by Parisi and Ball. It is just the right level of technical to give understanding to the problem but not so technical that someone without a plasma physics background will be lost.
on “Big Ideas for Making Fusion Power a Reality” ↗I think fusion is a lot closer than 50 years away. We should know without a doubt whether it is workable by 2050, perhaps before then. I strongly recommend the book "The Future of Fusion Energy"[1] as a good summary of the current state of the field. It's written by two fusion researchers and is legit (I have a Master's in Physics myself and almost did a Plasma Physics PhD so I am somewhat familiar…
on ““Energy in the Future”: a time capsule of energy concerns from 1953” ↗For anyone interested in the current state of the art of plasma physics and fusion technology I strongly recommend the book "The Future of Fusion Energy" by Jason Parisi and Justin Ball.[1] [1] https://www.amazon.com/Future-Fusion-Energy-Jason-Parisi/dp/...
on “Fusion and Magic” ↗I have a question, i ve read a book recommended on here, about fusion, called the "The Future of Fusion Energy". (It was very good, can recommend for a general topic overview and history of progress). But i do not understand the general approach to plasma-vessel construction, in particular, why it is so passive.…
on “The Truth About Nuclear Fusion Q Factors” ↗…organizations at : https://www.fusionenergybase.com/organizations Also the fusion subreddit is reasonably active : https://old.reddit.com/r/fusion/ For anyone after an up to date book on fusion The Future of Fusion Energy is good: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/43700662-the-future-of-f...
on “Fusion startup plans reactor with small but powerful superconducting magnets” ↗…drift pushes electrons to the bottom. I'm sure that doesn't make sense, but unfortunately there isn't really a shortcut to understanding here. Some books are pretty accessible though (I'm a fan of The Future of Fusion Energy). https://ebrary.net/174598/mathematics/drift_motion_energetic... And, of course, there is always the freely available IAEA textbook: https://www.iaea.org/publications/8879/fusion-physics
on “Major breakthrough on nuclear fusion energy” ↗…looking for more MIT's Zach Hartwig lecture on why fusion is moving now and why CFS is taking the approach it is this lecture is excellent. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0KuAx1COEk The book 'The Future of Fusion Energy' is also really good. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/43700662-the-future-of-f...
on “Dennis Whyte: Nuclear Fusion and the Future of Energy – Lex Fridman Podcast #353” ↗Yep. It's a well done article that had a lot of research behind it. FWIW if you're interested in Fusion the book 'The Future of Fusion Energy' is very good. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/43700662-the-future-of-f... Also Commonwealth Fusion Systems put out a lot of interesting stuff about how they are going. Even having a look at their…
on “Will we ever get fusion power?” ↗…increased faster than moors law for the last 50 years. Still people make jokes about fusion research, some things just take time. I recommend this excellent review of the even more excellent book „The future of fusion energy“ https://www.astralcodexten.com/p/your-book-review-the-future...
on “Nuclear fusion: WEST beats the world record for plasma duration” ↗Yeah, his other book "Atomic Adventures" was recommended to me by my friends and also mentioned in the book "The Future of Fusion Energy" by Parisi and Ball. I'll have to check it out!
on “Oklo has a plan to make tiny nuclear reactors that run off nuclear waste” ↗>That one might well be 100 times less. It might be, but it isn't. Turn to page 170 of your copy of The Future of Fusion Energy. It goes through typical efficiencies of each subsystem then concludes: >"Multiplying these conversion factors (i.e. eta h&cd = 0.4 from the heating/current drive systems, eta steam = 0.4 from the…
on “How close is nuclear fusion power?” ↗Where do you get fusion news? There is news on that subreddit of all the fusion startups, even the lesser known ones like HB11. The Kindle version of The Future of Fusion Energy is $US 12.
on “Fusion startup plans reactor with small but powerful superconducting magnets” ↗…not well modeled. A lot of improvements in fusion efficiency come from tinkering with settings and seeing what works. A caveat that I am not an expert in fusion, and am getting this from the book "The Future of Fusion Energy".
