"Hardware Descriptive Language (HDL) and Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) devices allow designers to quickly develop and simulate a sophisticated digital circuit, realize it on a prototyping device, and verify the operation of its physical implementation. As these technologies have matured, they have become accepted mainstream practice so that it is possible to use a PC and an inexpensive FPGA prototyping board to construct a complex digital system. This book uses a "learn by doing" approach to introduce the concepts and techniques of VHDL and FPGA to designers through a series of hands-on

I would recommend considering being more ambitious and learning how to design and prototype digital circuits on an FPGA development board. Pong Chu's book "FPGA Prototyping by VHDL Examples--Xilinx Spartan-3 Version" is really excellent, with lots of well-explained projects. You can get really nice Xilinx starter kits compatible with this book for cheap. To be absolutely compatible, you…
on “Ask HN: What's a good book to learn electronics?” ↗Good way to start is to learn one of the hardware description languages. I liked the book by Pong P. Chu "FPGA Prototyping by VHDL Examples: Xilinx Spartan-3 Version". The same book is also available for Verilog, which is another HDL. Later on you can take a look into higher level HDLs, since creating hardware in VHDL and Verilog is tedious.
