Why HN recommends it
Covers advanced Python idioms and design choices, such as metaclasses and what makes code Pythonic. It suits developers moving past the basics into more esoteric language features.

This looks less like a reading list and more like a lead-up to the author propping up his own book. He completely fails to mention any of the more advanced Python books like Expert Python Programming or Pro Python and especially Lutz's Python Programming which seems to have exactly the same type of content as he's book (general knowledge about various python libraries).
on “A Python Reading List by Wesley Chun ” ↗Offtopic: I recommend picking up Expert Python Programming by Tarek Ziadé if you want to get a feel for what is 'Pythonic'.
on “Functional programming with python” ↗I highly recommend going through Zed Shaw's "Learn Python the Hard Way". Other great Python related books to pick up are: Pro Python by Marty Alchin Expert Python Programming by Tarek Ziadé If you're looking to get into web development then, I'd suggest picking up: Practical Django Projects Pro Django and Django 1.1 Testing and Debugging Hope that helps!
on “Ask HN: Learning Python, Looking for book or class on software construction.” ↗"Expert Python Programming" by Tarek Ziade (http://www.packtpub.com/expert-python-programming/book)
on “Download any ebook free from Packt Publishing (through the end of the month)” ↗My personal favorite is Expert Python Programming by Tarek Ziadé and Michał Jaworski. Python High Performance by Gabriele Lanaro is also quite good.
on “Ask HN: Advanced Python Coding Books” ↗If you're not averse to books I'm yet again recommending "Robust Python" by Patrick Viafore and for more esoteric things like metaclasses I would recommend "Expert Python Programming, 3rd Edition" by Michal Jaworski & Tarek Ziade. It's not wholly dedicated to metaclasses, so there are tons more to learn from it as well.
on “Problems once solved by a metaclass can be solved by __init_subclass__” ↗…write a good book focused on more advanced aspects of the Python language: generators, metaclasses, descriptors, etc. From what I could tell from the reviews and TOC, some books such as Pro Python or Expert Python Programming seem to introduce those techniques, but it doesn't seem to be very in depth, and I don't need a book for the other topics they cover. There are a lot of blog posts about this but it's always based on…
on “A Python Reading List by Wesley Chun ” ↗…understand Python's asyncio story in depth? I'm just now finally understanding how to use stuff, but it was through a combination of the official documentation, the books "Using Asyncio in Python" and "Expert Python Programming", none of which were particularly good. Normally I'd rely just on the official docs, but the docs have created much confusion, it seems, because there's a lot in them that are useful more so for library/framework…
