We used Shneiderman's "Designing the User Interface" book (3rd Ed) back in Human Computer Interaction class. I kept the book and still use it. The link was a lucky find because the usability post list looked a tiny bit familiar.

IIRC, Shneiderman and Plaisant touch upon this somewhere in their book "Designing the User Interface" [0], and Schneiderman's "Eight Golden Rules of Interface Design" [1] may also be applicable. You might additionally want to look into resources that deal with copywriting. [0]: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Designing-User-Interface-Internation...…

Wow, Ben Shneiderman looks so young in that photo. He's still hard at work making computers easier for people to use, and he just published a major update to his classic book, "Designing the User Interface: Strategies for Effective Human-Computer Interaction", which just went to the printers and will be available on April 26. [1] I enjoyed working with him at the University of Maryland Human Computer Interaction…

…know how the system should work, from the users' point of view. Ben Cchneiderman (http://www.cs.umd.edu/~ben/) took this a step further in 1987: design the documentation first: Shneiderman, B. (1987), Designing the User Interface: Strategies for Effective Human-Computer Interaction. Reading, Mass.: Addison-Wesley. I referenced the technique in my thesis, and proposed it for aircraft autoflight systems! http://dspace.mit.edu/bitstream/1721.1/37310/1/ICAT-2000-3.p...

…wall, desk, or some random appliance. Is this the interface of the future? Over the last decade, Ben Shneiderman, head of the University of Maryland's Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory and author of Designing the User Interface: Strategies for Effective Human-Computer Interaction (Addison-Wesley, 1992), has been the most forceful voice against anthropomorphic interfaces. He argues that users want a sense of direct and immediate…
