Why HN recommends it
Walks through building a working relational database in Java, from the buffer manager up through the parser, giving hands-on understanding of how a DBMS works. Suits developers wanting practical implementation detail.

…only one, one, that gives an overview and actual examples of building a system that processes SQL. Everything else is theoretical or so general that you don't get enough direction to get started. It's "Database Design and Implementation" by Sciore. It's a little dated, but not by much. It is an underappreciated resource.
on “Let’s Build a Simple Database (2017)” ↗This one is tough and I would love to be able to learn more from a mix of reading + assignments as well. There are several books I would recommend: 1) Database Design and Implementation by Edward Sciore: http://www.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-EHEP00071... This book teaches RDBMS from conceptual perspective up to implementing your own RDBMS (using Java albeit). 2) OS Design…
on “How to Rock a Systems Design Interview” ↗Database Design and Implementation by Edward Sciore implements a fully working relational database from buffer manager up to parser and beyond. It's very much in the spirit of Tanenbaum's OS book. Here's the landing page for the book's…
on “Database Internals” ↗…rewrote the entire implementation from a columnar/vector-based engine (it uses Arrow) to row-based, using JDBC types, and it took me only 2 readthroughs of the book to be able to do that. There's also "Database Design and Implementation" by Edward Sciore
on “Demystifying Database Performance for Developers” ↗Not a professional database developer but study it in my spare time Books that stand out to me are: - Database Internals, Alex Petrov - Database Design & Implementation, Edward Sciore - How Query Engines Work, Andy Grove These have been much more useful than IE the Cow book or "DB Systems The Complete Book" to me.
on “Ask HN: Which books do you consider real gems in your field of work/study?” ↗There is a book that is exactly this, "Database Design and Implementation" by Edward Sciore. You write a database in Java while having the principles explained along the way. https://www.amazon.com/Database-Design-Implementation-Data-C...
on “The Inner Workings of Distributed Databases” ↗…build one in Kotlin: https://leanpub.com/how-query-engines-work The author also made it available for free at https://howqueryengineswork.com/00-introduction.html On implementation, my favourite is "Database Design and Implementation" by Ed Sciore, you write a relational DB in Java, including the parser.
on “Ask HN: Book Recommendation on Database Internals” ↗Edward Sciore: Database Design and Implementation: Second Edition, ISBN 978-3030338350
on “Ask HN: Books on building databases similar to Crafting Interpreters” ↗"Database Design and Implementation" by Edward Sciore is also a very great read with a lot of examples written in Java (actually a small DBS). For actual research I'd recommend all stuff from Andy (Pavlo), Viktor Leis, Thorsten Grust,…
on “Database Fundamentals” ↗I haven't been able to get my hands on the book, but Edward Sciore's "Database Design and Implementation" is supposed to be such a book.
on “How does a relational database work? (2017)” ↗…the code in bottom-up order of layers. Readme says this: > The implementation takes heavy inspiration from Edward Sciore's SimpleDB, augmented by implementations of various exercises in his textbook Database Design and Implementation.
on “Foundations of Databases (1995)” ↗Database Design and Implementation, ISBN 3030338355 ¹). Java source code for the SimpleDB system from the book available from the author's website ²). ¹) https://www.amazon.com/dp/3030338355/ ²) http://www.cs.bc.edu/~sciore/simpledb/
on “Writing a C Compiler: Build a Real Programming Language from Scratch” ↗Nice. I also wanted to know the details behind database engine and ACID compliance. So, decided to follow Database Design and Implementation by Edward Sciore, and re-implemented the database in Python: https://github.com/quazi-irfan/pySimpleDB This db treats file as raw disk and reads and writes in blocks. In the book, your step 3 and 4 will…
on “Show HN: GoSQL – A query engine in 319 LoC” ↗…about how there were a load of hobbyist compilers and a lack of hobbyist databases, then in a response mentioned the largeness of the research/conceptual space for databases. Those tweets got me to put database design and implementation onto the top of my ‘read up on’ pile. So, thanks.
