…anything that grabs your attention. Not all of these are to my taste, but they have been broadly popular: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (1979), The Da Vinci Code (2003), The Big Sleep (1939), The Color out of Space (1927) (short), The Hunt for Red October (1984), Hondo (1953), Get Shorty (1990).
on “Ask HN: How to transition from non-fiction to fiction reading?” ↗His short story The Color Out of Space has an amazingly accurate depiction of the effect of nuclear fallout on the land. People in it go crazy and shun the valley, but I think it's a good way to see what he would have thought about that development.
on “Supernatural Horror in Literature (1927)” ↗Yes! I think you're right. That's a great connection, never thought of Annihilation in that way. "Color out of Space" is the first HPL story I ever read, and still one of my favorites.
on “Plants don’t have ears. But they can still detect sound” ↗I'm reminded of Lovecraft's 'the color out of space'. It's fascinating to try and imagine what that's like.
on “Tetrachromats: people who see colors invisible to most of us (2014)” ↗This reminds me of horror fiction like Lovecraft's Color Out of Space[1] and Neill Blomkamp's short Zygote (2017)[2][3] [1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Colour_Out_of_Space [2] https://www.imdb.com/pt/title/tt7078780/ [3] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKWB-MVJ4sQ
on “Scientists claim to have found colour no one has seen before” ↗Reminds me of the classic lovecraft story: The Color Out of Space
on “Flying squirrels glow pink thanks to fluorescence” ↗Reminds me of The Color Out of Space. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Colour_Out_of_Space
on “Impossible color” ↗…actually find 4chan more grating. I appreciate Lovecraft, especially for the influence it had on other writers, on comics, tabletop and video games; and some of this stories are pretty good (e.g. The Color Out of Space, The Outsider). But it's really hard to swallow his racism and xenophobia, especially since as mentioned by others, it cannot simply be excused by saying he was "a man of his time". He was xenophobic…
