More than 200 cartoons from syndicated cartoonist John McPherson show our appreciation for, and sometimes our impatience with, one of the most important bedrocks of our nations future: our teachers. From elementary school to college, and from piano teachers to sports coaches, this book makes a hilarious and heartwarming gift for our favorite mentors.

The one where DailyWtf submissions are always boiled down and reconstituted into unrecognizable just-so parables that read like the editors of Chicken Soup for the Soul tried to write Malcolm Gladwell articles for InfoWorld.

You just reminded me of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series from the 90s that came in the form of self help books and structured diaries. They sold tons. Not sure if the franchise is still around.

…interest to the membership rather than commercial value. I'd pay a monthly fee to be able to go hang out in a nice space full of books that are selected to be interesting (to me!) rather than stuff like "Chicken Soup for the Soul" and the latest fad diet. Sort of a bookstore version of HN, I suppose.

This article and the book is exactly what's wrong with personal finance education. There is no special wisdom, clever tricks or golden rules in finance. Chicken soup for the soul won't help. Personal finance should be taught as a math problem. Figure out the cost of the lifestyle you want, and work backwards from there. If your fancy house, car, and dinners out cost $100,000…

…is only in the hundreds.) In the economics of books, the big money is fiction. (50 Shades, Harry Potter, etc). To a lesser extent, you have some non-fiction titles making a decent amount of money (Chicken Soup for the Soul, Eat Pray Love, etc). Way down on the totem pole are the trade publications like computer books. The economics on that level basically dictate that you slave away writing "Java for Dummies" for less…

  • …critiques of his appeal, without just devolving into pure partisan bias. Personally I liked his talks on Youtube from Harvard, but didn't enjoy his book. It was like he was trying to cash in with a "Chicken Soup for The Soul" knockoff. It's not terrible, but not worthy of a philosopher and too geared to the mass market.

    > Believe in yourself and anything is possible This sort of Chicken Soup for the Soul, chessy simplification is indeed not useful and not going to help people who read it gain much at all. However, as many others have pointed out, the simple fact in this world is that, to be successful,…
