Carpe Jugulum (Latin for "seize the throat", cf. Carpe diem) is a comic fantasy novel by Terry Pratchett, the twenty-third in the Discworld series. It was first published in 1998. In Carpe Jugulum, Terry Pratchett pastiches the traditions of vampire literature, playing with the mythic archetypes and featuring a tongue-in-cheek reversal of 'vampyre' subculture with young vampires who wear bright clothes, drink wine, and stay up until noon. on “Ask HN: Books you read in 2018?” ↗…don't always rate Guards Guards but it is essential entry to Night Watch (IMO one of the best books). Also a shout out for underrated options; Soul Music (great tag line, lovely observational comedy) and Carpe Jugulum (some fan favourite characters, but also one of my fav bit-part characters - Lacrimosa)
on “Discworld on Page and Screen, Part 1: Serious Comedy” ↗…not the best of the Discworld novels, and tbh I find Rincewind a tad annoying. I personally find any novel in the Witches arc a lot more enjoyable, starting with "Lords and Ladies". Other good ones: "Carpe Jugulum", "Equal Rites". Another very enjoyable set is the night watch arc. Both "Guards, Guards" and "Night Watch" are excellent. [edit]: oh yeah, and how could I forget: "Small Gods". Hilarious even if it…

"Oh, I'm sure there are worse crimes--" "But they starts with thinking about people as things..." --Carpe Jugulum, by Terry Pratchett. when you get to thinking that your Idea is more important than people, tread really, really carefully. The ground under you isn’t as solid as you think. Usually the more desperately…
on “Why ideologies harm individuals” ↗…publications, funding is needed for equipment, postocs, etc. To get funding, a list of publications is needed so that people recognize your track-record. It keeps on spiraling. To paraphrase from Pratchett in Carpe Jugulum: "Human families raise their successors, but a [s/vampire/professor] is raising competitors." There's a limited funding pool that the researchers are fighting for. It doesn't seem much better in the…

on “Managers with a business degree reduce employees' wages, do not increase profit” ↗The drummer and I also have a side band named Carpe Jugulum, after another Terry Pratchett story. And another bandmate was on the concom for the Discworld convention. Like I said, it hit us pretty hard. I hope he's drinking, fighting, and stealing his way through…
on “Sir Terry Pratchett has died” ↗…are a couple I've never read (they're sitting on the shelf next to me - Raising Steam, Unseen Academicals, Making Money). That way I'll always have another Terry Pratchett novel to read. I felt that Carpe Jugulum was a retread of Lords & Ladies, and the formula was getting stale by that point. If Monstrous Regiment is YA, it has to go up against Tiffany Aching, and it definitely loses there.
on “Royal Mail to Issue “Terry Pratchett’s Discworld” Stamps” ↗I haven't read Carpe Jugulum for years, but the slow/dim/clumsy meaning of Klotz has been adopted into (American) English as "klutz".
on “Pfeilstorch” ↗As Terry Pratchett put it in Carpe Jugulum: > And sin, young man, is when you treat people as things. Including yourself. That’s what sin is.
on “Swiss voters reject proposal to cap population at ten million” ↗I have read five novels ( Carpe Jugulum, Blackout, The Graveyard Book, Never Let me Go, and the Accidental Time Machine) and and find it far more convenient than my Kindle1/K2 for indoor reading - Ironically the battery is always charged on…
on “Ask HN: Four months since launch: how are you finding the iPad?” ↗…below a defined threshold, occurring approximately ten years before Pratchett’s formal diagnosis. The diagnosis was announced in 2007, meaning the shift occurred in 1997. 1997 was after Jingo and before Carpe Jugulum and The Last Continent, and 2007 was after Making Money and before Unseen Academicals. The Last Continent is the first identified in the paper as below the cutoff for adjectives which they use to identify…
