Campbell biology
on “Ask HN: Best general Biology book?” ↗…route, you'll likely need to take the GRE Biology specialty test, which was quite difficult for me with almost no biology background. It took me about 6 months to teach myself [2]. I liked the textbook "Campbell Biology" by Urry et al. as well as others, although I find the lack of citations in textbooks really annoying for the way I learn (following rabbit holes). * Personally, I'm trying to avoid the bioinformatics…
on “Ask HN: Getting started in biology with a software background” ↗I would recommend "Campbell Biology". This book is usually used for olympiad preparation. But, you may check it out first.
on “Ask HN: Best general Biology book?” ↗…is maybe too much without solid biology background knowledge. The typical textbook is the Janeway (Immunology), but that's certainly too much. What I liked as an introductory textbook in general was Campbell Biology, but that covers essentially all of Biology. There is a chapter on the immune system as well. All those books are horribly expensive in the US, and still quite expensive in other countries, though.
on “Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2025” ↗Here are some hits $181 Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections [0] $275 Fundamentals of Financial Management [1] $201 Psychology, 11th Edition [2] $248 Management Information Systems: Managing the Digital Firm (14th Edition) [3] $254…

EDIT: here's a link to book mentioned in article - http://www.amazon.com/Campbell-Biology-MasteringBiology-9th-...
on “3 Major Publishers Sue Open-Education Textbook Start-Up” ↗…researchers in biology who provide their points of view on the main themes of the book. There is a bewildering confusion of editions and versions of this book, but look for a book called "Biology" or "Campbell Biology" with Neil A. Campbell and Jane B. Reece in the author list, but not necessarily listed first. There is what I believe to be an abridged version called "Biology: Concepts and Connections", and something…
on “Ask HN: What's the best textbook you've read?” ↗Really? So like, say, Campbell Biology? That's what I've seen used in high school and colleges, and I don't recall any mention of epigenetics in it. (At least in the 7th edition one, published 2004... not sure how much it's changed since.)
on “Poverty leaves a mark on our genes” ↗Yeah you're looking at the wrong book. That's copyrighted 2019, not 2004. And not sure what "7e" means (doesn't seem to be the same as "7th edition") but it's Campbell Essential Biology, not Campbell Biology.
on “Poverty leaves a mark on our genes” ↗…supposedly college-level, and from experience in college I can say that "college-level" isn't always what you'd hope it to be. What portion of the population can open to a random page of something like "Campbell Biology", read the text, and actually understand at least the non-technical aspects of the text? (that is, ignoring the biology-specific terms that were explained in prior pages of the book) This is a single-digit…
on “Literacy in the United States” ↗…uncomfortable with the implications of human evolution, for different reasons, and hardly any teacher wants to bother with a fight over a subject they can just ignore. Book quality varies. You can get Campbell Biology as I did, or you can go to a homeschool supply place and get some creationist nonsense. Both extremes are available. I could do without teachers pushing their personal political views. I have my own,…
