When I was a kid in the 90s, I worked through a very fun book called “Build your own Flight Sim in C++”. It was for DOS, so it also covered the 3D graphics algorithms and techniques you needed. Fun times.
on “Vertigo – a public domain 3D flight simulator (2003)” ↗…Fabien Sanglard's Game Engine Black Books are excellent. Someone linked to this flight simulator book the other day on here, which I'm now on the lookout for a hard copy: https://archive.org/details/build-your-own-flight-sim-in-c-d... The second author of the above, Chris Lampton, also has a book on "Programming 3D maze games in C/C++": https://archive.org/details/gardensofimagina00lamp and another flight sim "flights of fantasy":…
on “I collect and read old computer manuals” ↗I found this book by Chris Lampton to be very helpful for my own 3D DOS pursuits: https://archive.org/details/build-your-own-flight-sim-in-c-d... There's also various article series in the flipcode archives: https://flipcode.com/archives/articles.shtml
on “DOS game “F-15 Strike Eagle II” reverse engineering/reconstruction war stories” ↗True. There was another book called "Build your own Flight Sim in C++" by Michael Radtke and Christopher Lampton, but I personally like "Flights of Fantasy" better.
on “Simple Physics-based Flight Simulation with C++” ↗…followed a book in the 90's to create a flight simulator from scratch. Besides learning Bresenham's line algorithm, I learned a lot of linear algebra. Probably this book: https://archive.org/details/build-your-own-flight-sim-in-c-d...
