…blather below: https://www.amazon.com/Taking-Charge-Adult-Russell-Barkley-e... --- The biggest things, broadly, are: Step 0: Get engaged medically - with diagnosis, collaboration, and medication. ADHD is not something you can manage on your own. It's literally "the disorder of not being able to fix the problems you can clearly see", so you need external feedback and assistance. Doctor(s), therapist,…

I recently watched the following series of videos by Russell Barkley who I believe is one of the world's leading ADHD researchers. I think it's a good place to start because it describes the scientific understanding of what ADHD is, which I feel has given me a more solid grounding to evaluating other things I read and…

…seeing a therapist who specializes in the condition. The most fascinating part of this journey is finally understanding myself better. I've been spending hours every week reading others experiences with ADHD, watching videos (Dr. Russell Barkley is awesome), and in general just figuring out who I am and why I'm that way. I'm beginning to understand that habits I've had, such as being "hyper organized" (actually,…

Russell Barkley's videos on YouTube are a good overview of the science. ADHD is defined as a cluster of symptoms like many other disorders. Probably there are different etiologies. But the treatments are the same. Mild ADHD was less of an impediment before industrialization.…

It is possible, the condition is a bit poorly named. The video of the talk by Russell Barkley that is linked elsewhere is a good primer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSfCdBBqNXY). People with ADHD can have episodes of hyper focus. However this is a bit a misnomer, it's called Perseveration and is not really a good thing, and has more to do with one's inability to task switch (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perseveration).…

Gabor Mate has got a lot of publicity recently but his ideas are (to put it charitably) on the fringe. I recommend Russell Barkley's youtube videos and books on ADHD if you want to understand the condition and the current research.

Great video I came across that expresses similar ideas about it being executive function that's the challenge, not attention. "This is how you treat ADHD based off science, Dr Russell Barkley part of 2012 Burnett Lecture" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tpB-B8BXk0 Edit: here's a newer one by the same speaker "ADHD as Motivation Deficit Disorder" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bR3RJU6838c

Dr Russell Barkley is one of the world's leading ADHD researchers. I've seen this talk before, its really good and reflects modern diagnostics and treatment. I'm surprised this ended up on HN.

Dr. Gabor Mate¹ should be taken with large grains of salt when it comes to ADHD and related conditions. There is a lack of published research or dedicated expertise on the matter; Dr. Russell Barkley, a leading ADHD expert and researcher², has a good video on the subject³. ¹ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabor_Mat%C3%A9…

I'd recommend discussing with a medical professional and see what your options are. :) Regardless, if you are struggling with ADHD, I would recommend going on youtube and looking at videos by a guy named Russell Barkley. He's got a bunch and wow did I feel seen after watching a few of them.

Russel Barkley has some great books. I also like Ned Hallowel. They present a fairly sane, clear, practical perspective on what ADHD is and what living with it is like. Stimulants do tend to work differently on people with ADHD than on the general population. It's mostly due to executive dysfunction which is largely exacerbated by…
